Now, a senior EU official has warned the European agricultural sector is going to face serious \u2018pain\u2019 as a result of losing access to Ukrainian animal feed and fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p>Long known colloquially as the breadbasket of Europe, Ukraine produces a significant percentage of the world\u2019s market share of grains, including the likes of wheat, corn and barley, which Europe in part relies on to feed livestock.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>However, as a result of the Russian invasion of the region, Europe has largely lost access to its Ukrainian supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUkraine and Russia between them account for over 30 per cent of world trade in wheat,\u201d\u00a0Michael Scannell \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-commission-warns-of-major-food-and-farming-impact-of-russia-ukraine-war\/\">reportedly<\/a> the second senior-most civil servant in the EU\u2019s Agricultural Department \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EP_Agriculture\/status\/1498311586808750086\">told<\/a> the bloc\u2019s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.<\/p>\n<p>The Irishman went on to note that the two nations also are responsible for 32 per cent of the world\u2019s corn, 17 per cent of its barley, and over half of the world\u2019s share of\u00a0Sunflower oil, seeds, and meals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Follow live the AGRI Committee debate on the impact of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine on EU agricultural markets. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/U8Xhspk3xa\">https:\/\/t.co\/U8Xhspk3xa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 AGRI Committee Press (@EP_Agriculture) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EP_Agriculture\/status\/1498311586808750086?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Europe\u2019s agricultural and food sectors have now suffered serious reductions in access to this market, a fact that Scannell describes as \u201cextremely worrying\u201d considering the level of reliance Europe has on what both countries produce for their own agricultural production.<\/p>\n<p>The civil servant also noted that Russia \u2014 despite previous sanctions before the war \u2014 remained a major trade partner fo Europe in regards to\u00a0\u201cconfectionary, wines, spirits, biscuits, flowers, etc\u201d and that now,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-commission-warns-of-major-food-and-farming-impact-of-russia-ukraine-war\/\">According<\/a> to POLITICO, he believes that the international black sheep will now be disincentivised from engaging in this trade as a result of sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>Worryingly, as POLITICO notes: \u201cmuch of the EU\u2019s meat and dairy industry relies on imported feed crops from Ukraine, and the bloc is also hooked on Russian gas and fertilizers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Short-term supply worries however are reportedly only compounded by the fact that, as a result of hostilities, the production of certain cereals will likely be disrupted in Ukraine, which risks extending the supply problem into the medium term.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The expectation is that the forthcoming summer sewings of corn will be disrupted,\u201d he told the committee. \u201cClearly, with a war going on, it\u2019s very very difficult to focus on these types of plantings.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bidenflation Meets Breadenflation? UK Bread Prices Set to Rise 20 Per Cent <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4eqw0f8hcQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/4eqw0f8hcQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1463126686485127169?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Scannell is not the first person to warn about the knock-on effect supply issues from Ukraine could have on European agriculture sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Fears regarding a possible invasion of Ukraine has been driving up the price of wheat since autumn last year, with there being fears at one stage that the price of bread would rise by up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/11\/22\/inflation-uk-bread-prices-set-to-rise-20\/\">20 per cent<\/a> as a result of inflation.<\/p>\n<p>However, issues regarding the supply of cereals are not the only problems now facing Europe, with the supply of livestock feed and fertilizer now also under threat as a result of the ongoing war.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Scannell also noted the reliance European agriculture has on Russian natural gas as being a cause for concern, with the hydrocarbon fuel being directly used in the production of fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all of these issues however, Scannell said that the problems faced regarding the current invasion would have to be weathered by the bloc, and that his department was committed to strengthening the EU\u2019s food security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ukrainians are paying with their lives, not in Euros,\u201d the civil servant said in agreement with another speaker, noting that \u201cthe security of Europe itself\u201d was on the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have to pay a price \u2014 and we will \u2014 we have to view it in that context,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe consequences of this Russian aggression will have a major impact on our agri-food sector, and it will be painful, but, we have to suffer that pain,\u201d Scannell also told those gathered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While many enjoy European-reared beef, in many cases the crops that feed the animals while they grow come from Ukraine.
