It is time for the Biden White House to call upon \u2026 Jared!<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the best and the brightest, our foreign policy mandarins must have felt like it was Christmas Day when a senile dementia patient became president. Finally! No meddling politicians to get in the way of our beautifully designed plans worked out at the Council on Foreign Relations. Although Joseph R. Biden is technically, in a strictly legal sense, \u201cpresident,\u201d it\u2019s progressives running his domestic policy, and think-tank geniuses running his foreign policy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Things are going great!<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s review the consistent position on Russia from our ruling class, informed by the whiz kids of international affairs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OBAMA ERA 2009:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Throughout President Obama\u2019s \u201creset\u201d of the relationship with Russia \u2014 which had \u201cdeteriorated alarmingly\u201d under President Bush, according to the <em>New York Times<\/em> \u2014 foreign policy experts were thrilled to have an American leader finally acknowledging the end of the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Times<\/em> article cheerfully reported that \u201cMr. Obama has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/01\/world\/europe\/01reset.html\">resolved not to let the ghosts of the 20th<\/a>\u00a0century get in the way of his goals in the 21st.\u201d The paper editorialized, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/12\/opinion\/12iht-edrussia.1.20140170.html\">We are relieved<\/a>\u00a0that Washington and Moscow are talking about cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a May 20, 2009, column titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/05\/20\/opinion\/20sestanovich.html\">Cold War Leftovers,<\/a>\u201d Stephen Sestanovich expressed delight that \u201cthe cold war really is over.\u201d More than two years later, on Oct. 28, 2011, British historian Geoffrey Wheatcroft informed <em>Times<\/em> readers: \u201cPutin\u2019s Russia, though obnoxious enough,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/10\/30\/magazine\/rethinking-that-special-relationship-between-the-us-and-britain.html\">scarcely represents a strategic threat<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20089914\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20089914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-88874728.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1180\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Barack Obama and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin shake hands during a meeting at the latter\u2019s country residence in Novo Ogaryovo, near Moscow, on July 7, 2009. Bush\u2019s tenure,\u201d the <em>Times<\/em> cooed, \u201cmany people [in Russia]\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/08\/world\/europe\/08russia.html\">were relieved by Mr. Obama\u2019s election<\/a>.\u201d Indeed, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/06\/world\/europe\/06russia.html\">Russia\u2019s leaders<\/a>\u00a0\u2026 could not say enough good things about President Obama.\u201d Sting was right: The Russians DO love their children, too!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Obama didn\u2019t sanction Russia for placing spies on U.S. soil, and barely did for annexing Crimea. Peace reigned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROMNEY ERA 2012:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>When Mitt Romney came along and described Russia as our \u201cNo. 1 geopolitical foe\u201d in 2012, the world laughed itself silly.<\/p>\n<p>Ridiculing Romney in an editorial titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/03\/29\/opinion\/the-never-ending-cold-war.html\">The Never-Ending Cold War<\/a>,\u201d the <em>Times<\/em> said his remark revealed \u201ceither a shocking lack of knowledge about international affairs or just craven politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BBC cited \u201cexperts\u201d who said Romney\u2019s statements on Russia reflected \u201chis lack of experience in foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>MSNBC\u2019s Lawrence O\u2019Donnell proved Romney was wrong with a video clip of Andrea Mitchell stating: \u201cRussia is not the greatest foreign policy challenge.\u201d Enough said!<\/p>\n<p>MSNBC\u2019s Rachel Maddow couldn\u2019t contain her hilarity over the Republican National Convention\u2019s offering \u201can extra bonus of threatening Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a debate, Obama responded to Romney, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bowhUWl6rxQ\">The 1980s are now calling<\/a>\u00a0to ask for their foreign policy back.\u201d To hoots of laughter at the Democratic National Convention, he accused Romney of being \u201cstuck in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nRxbFcAGfvM\">Cold War mind warp<\/a>.\u201d Then-Sen. John Kerry joked, \u201cFolks, Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from Alaska. Mitt Romney talks like he\u2019s only seen Russia by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspiringquotes.us\/quotes\/Ma0F_SnovLWO1\">watching \u2018Rocky IV<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRUMP ERA, 2016:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump ran on having better relations with Russia, and he questioned the wisdom of letting every country in Europe into NATO \u2014 whereupon Russia became the most psychotically evil country in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all the other Republican candidates\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/11\/us\/politics\/transcript-republican-presidential-debate.html\">jumped on Trump<\/a>, sneering, \u201cthat\u2019s not how the real world works\u201d (Jeb!), calling Putin a \u201cgangster\u201d (Sen. Marco Rubio) and vowing to \u201cstart rebuilding the Sixth Fleet right under [Putin\u2019s] nose, rebuilding the \u2026 missile defense program in Poland right under his nose \u2026 conduct very aggressive military exercises in the Baltic states \u2026 and I might also put in a few more thousand troops into Germany\u201d (Carly Fiorina).<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, Republican primary voters thus had a choice of two very divergent views of Russia. They picked the guy who wanted to have a better relationship with Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Then Trump beat Hillary, and Democrats announced that he\u2019d stolen the election by colluding with Russia, the most evil country on Earth. (This was absolutely NOT an insane conspiracy theory supported by zero evidence.)<\/p>\n<p>To our great misfortune, instead of doing what he\u2019d run on, Trump decided the sole focus of his administration would be proving that he was not too friendly to Russia! Voters never got the thawed relationship with Russia they\u2019d voted for. (BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>RIDDLE: WHAT\u2019S EASIER TO ROLL THAN AN EASTER EGG?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The smoking gun of Trump\u2019s collusion with Russia was supposedly Trump\u2019s platform committee rejecting a delegate\u2019s proposed amendment to sell \u201clethal weapons\u201d to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>You know who else didn\u2019t want to sell lethal weapons to Ukraine? Obama. German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Leslie Gelb, president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations. Professor Graham Allison of Harvard, national defense expert. As Matthew Rojansky, director of the Kennan Institute, explained to the <em>New York Times<\/em> in 2015, sending lethal weapons to Ukraine would make the U.S. \u201ca belligerent party in a proxy war with Russia, the only country on Earth that can destroy the United States. That\u2019s why this is a big deal.\u201d This was \u201cthe view of many experts,\u201d the <em>Times<\/em> added.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll never guess what happened next. Before the end of his first year in office, Trump approved the sale of \u2026 lethal weapons to Ukraine! Conservatives were thrilled! See? Trump isn\u2019t controlled by Putin! What do you say now, Resistance? (They said: Trump still stole the election by colluding with Russia.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>BIDEN ERA, 2022:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Cold War is back! The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back!<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the experts and journalists whose deep study has led them to a sophisticated take on Russia (that flips back and forth with the politics of the moment), my position on Russia has been as unchanged as the Rock of Gibraltar, at least since the end of the Cold War.
