In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the Club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the Club\u2019s sponsors and partners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe sale of the Club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process,\u201d he continued. \u201cI will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and Club.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Abramovich added that all proceeds from the sale will go to a charity set up for the \u201c<\/span><span>benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine,\u201d <\/span><span>Abramovich said.<\/span><span> \u201cThis includes providing critical funds towards the urgent and immediate needs of victims, as well as supporting the long-term work of recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPlease know that this has been an incredibly difficult decision to make, and it pains me to part with the Club in this manner,\u201d he added. \u201cHowever, I do believe this is in the best interest of the Club.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Abramovich purchased Chelsea FC in 2003 for around $185 million, and is now seeking roughly $2.24 billion in the sale, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/chelsea-engchelsea\/story\/4606808\/chelsea-for-sale-as-pressure-grows-on-owner-roman-abramovich-sources\"><span>ESPN<\/span><\/a><span>. During Abramovich\u2019s time as owner, Chelsea won two UEFA Champions League trophies \u2014 including the 2020-2021 title \u2014 and five Premier League titles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Over the weekend, Abramovich gave over \u201c<\/span><span>stewardship\u201d of the team to Chelsea\u2019s charitable foundation in an attempt to avoid selling the club.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Following last week\u2019s invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the government of the United Kingdom could sanction <\/span><span>Abramovich, seizing Chelsea as an asset. Chris Bryant, a <\/span><span>member of British Parliament, called on <\/span><span>Abramovich to be stripped of his ownership stake after leaked 2019 documents showed ties to Russian corruption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSurely, Mr. Abramovich should no longer be able to own a football club in this country?\u201d Bryant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/27\/football\/roman-abramovich-chelsea-owner-russia-ukraine-spt-intl\/index.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> according to CNN.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-02\/roman-abramovich-is-offloading-london-homes-british-mp-says\"><span>Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span>, the U.K. government has sanctioned \u201cmore than 100 Russian individuals and entities in response to the invasion of Ukraine,\u201d but Abramovich is not on the list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Russian billionaire is worth a reported $13.5 billion, and \u201camassed his wealth from dividends and sales of privatized assets acquired from the former Soviet Union,\u201d per Bloomberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
