Version: 4.0.47--><p class=\"subheading\"><span>A group of over 130 alumni of China\u2019s top universities issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and calling on their own government to honor its 1994 security pact with the Ukrainian government. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The statement strongly contradicts the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s neutral public stance on the invasion and its background support of the aggressive Russian government.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Radio Free Asia<\/span><span> (RFA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/china\/ukraine-scholars-03012022125137.html\">quoted<\/a> from the statement, which will probably not be seen by many Chinese, as their authoritarian government is censoring criticism of the Russian war effort:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cWe strongly condemn Russian aggression against Ukraine and resolutely support the just struggle of the Ukrainian people to resist it, and defend their country,\u201d said the statement, signed by graduates of disparate departments from journalism to physics at Peking, Tsinghua and Renmin universities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It cited a joint security pact signed between China and Ukraine that commits Beijing to \u201cproviding security guarantees\u201d to Ukraine, in the event that Ukraine was the subject of foreign aggression.\u00a0<\/span><span>Letter signatory Lu Nan, who graduated from the journalism department at Renmin University, said the letter was initiated by alumni of Peking University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe all have a common purpose, which is to oppose war and maintain peace,\u201d Lu told RFA. \u201cRussia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine is a fundamental challenge to human conscience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>According to Lu, the alumni are \u201cvery angry at the large number of Little Pinks who support the use of violence in Russia in online comments.\u201d Little Pinks is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/society\/article\/2095458\/rise-little-pink-chinas-young-angry-digital-warriors\"><span>derogatory nickname<\/span><\/a><span> for the angry young hyper-nationalists that infest Chinese social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20081818\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-1238875845.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20081818 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/GettyImages-1238875845-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"A picture shows damages after the shelling by Russian forces of Constitution Square in Kharkiv, Ukraine&#039;s second-biggest city, on March 2, 2022. - One Chinese embassy official told RFA that Chinese in Ukraine are being advised to conceal their nationality from the locals \u2013 only a few days after the embassy arrogantly suggested slapping Chinese Communist flags on vehicles to protect them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs soon as they see me as a Chinese face, they think I\u2019m here to sabotage or support Russia. I don\u2019t think the current situation in Ukraine is safe for Chinese,\u201d a Chinese video blogger in Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/28\/china\/chinese-citizens-ukraine-danger-intl-hnk-mic\/index.html\">told<\/a> <\/span><span>CNN<\/span><span> on Monday, noting Ukrainian media is filled with \u201cdisgusting\u201d quotes from the Little Pinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beijing\u2019s approach to Ukraine seemed to anticipate the same quick weekend victory as Moscow and grows more muddled as the war drags on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chinese state media stubbornly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/02\/heres-how-chinese-media-is-covering-ukraine.html\"><span>refuses<\/span><\/a><span> to describe Russia\u2019s action as an \u201cattack\u201d or \u201cinvasion,\u201d instead using the \u201cspecial military operation\u201d language preferred by the Kremlin. Chinese media coverage is largely focused on putative ceasefire negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, with occasional human interest pieces on Ukrainian refugees and daily life in Kyiv, but very little coverage of the war itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Wednesday, Chinese banking regulator Guo Shuqing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/02\/china-will-not-join-sanctions-against-russia-banking-regulator-says.html\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> his government will not join in growing international sanctions against Russia. This was unsurprising, given both China\u2019s dark alliance with the Russians and Beijing\u2019s often-stated desire to eliminate sanctions as a means of punishing human rights violations. However, the <\/span><i><span>Washington Post<\/span><\/i> <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/02\/russia-economy-sanctions-china-support-ukraine\/\">noted<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday that Chinese support for the embattled Russian economy is proving much less valuable than Moscow expected:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>China has not rushed to help Russia soften the blow. Chinese officials and commentators have urged caution at drawing American ire and instead suggested China focus on building up its resilience against similar measures that could target the country in the future rather than helping Russia now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>[\u2026]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Without making public statements, some Chinese institutions appear to be quietly adhering to sanctions, and there are few signs of significant attempts to create a lifeline for the Russian economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>This failure of China\u2019s nerve was especially noticeable in the energy market, where China was widely expected to step in and replace lost European business \u2013 but now appears hesitant in the face of rising prices and Beijing\u2019s reluctance to burn bridges with the West, where its business interests are far more valuable than anything Russia can offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cChina would risk losing access to technologies from the West if it ignores restrictions on Russia.
