Mitt Romney (R-UT) faces potential censure from his own party in Utah if a petition spreading among the state\u2019s GOP gains traction.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSeEIhZIE5RjtoqMUDOydnMbA-LWwTeR8qkdA1bSsYIbkJW-uw\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">petition<\/a>, which is circulating on social media, accuses Utah\u2019s junior senator of having failed to \u201crepresent the average conservative Utah voter,\u201d as well has having \u201cmisrepresented himself as a Republican,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/politics\/2021\/02\/15\/exclusive-mitt-romney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Salt Lake Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Willard Mitt Romney has prioritized his personal and political vendetta against President Donald J. Trump ahead of the Constitution of the United States, the interest of We, the People, and the advancement of the Republican Platform,\u201d the petition alleges in part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSenator Willard Mitt Romney has condoned false and misleading statements that have led the 117th Congress of the United States to further conduct an illegal and unconstitutional 2nd Impeachment proceeding against President Donald J. Trump,\u201d the petition later states.<\/p>\n<p>The petition also claims Romney \u201cappears to be an agent for the Establishment Deep State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of the Republican Party in Utah are not endorsing the petition\u2019s assertions, having released a statement Monday that said: \u201cThe differences between our own Utah Republicans showcase a diversity of thought, in contrast to the danger of a party fixated on \u2018unanimity of thought.\u2019 There is power in our differences as a political party, and we look forward to each senator explaining their votes to the people of Utah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The petition says Romney \u201cembarrassed the State of Utah\u201d when he voted to convict former President Donald Trump of inciting an insurrection on the day a mob of his supporters broke into the Capitol last month.<\/p>\n<p>Romney issued a statement explaining why he voted to convict Trump for a second time last week. As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/trump-is-guilty-sen-romney-issues-statement-explaining-impeachment-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cAfter careful consideration of the respective counsels\u2019 arguments, I have concluded that President Trump is guilty of the charge made by the House of Representatives,\u201d Romney began, adding that he believes Trump \u201cattempted to corrupt the election by pressuring the Secretary of State of Georgia to falsify the election results in his state,\u201d which is an allegation not covered in the impeachment article.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPresident Trump incited the insurrection against Congress by using the power of his office to summon his supporters to Washington on January 6th and urging them to march on the Capitol during the counting of electoral votes,\u201d Romney continued. \u201cHe did this despite the obvious and well known threats of violence that day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPresident Trump also violated his oath of office by failing to protect the Capitol, the Vice President, and others in the Capitol,\u201d Romney concluded. \u201cEach and every one of these conclusions compels me to support conviction.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Romney was also one of the five Republican senators to support calling in witnesses during the impeachment trial, a move that was later shelved shortly before the Senate vote. Romney and Sen.
