Chip Roy (R-TX) is one of several Republican congressmembers who have taken issue with President Joe Biden\u2019s State of the Union attendance rules and made the decision not to go to the event because of them.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Breitbart News in an interview on Tuesday hours before the address was scheduled to begin, Roy listed several reasons for his refusal to attend, including the fence barrier erected around the Capitol at the request of Biden\u2019s Secret Service, the convenient timing of the Capitol dropping its mask mandate, and the vaccine mandates that remain in place in some parts of the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cLook, there\u2019s a fence around the Capitol of the United States. The American people can\u2019t come visit their Capitol. They\u2019re going to force testing requirements on members of Congress to go do our job. And meanwhile, they\u2019re lifting the mask mandate of the last almost two years, just in time for the State of the Union so they can go put on a show,\u201d Roy said.<\/p>\n<p>Roy, an outspoken member of the House Freedom Caucus and a leading voice opposing coronavirus vaccine mandates, went on to observe that some of those who were once deemed essential workers, such as nurses and military servicemembers, have been terminated from their jobs for choosing not to receive a vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have vaccine mandates on the American people, nurses who are losing their job refusing to get a jab. Members of our military refusing to get a jab get fired. We\u2019ve got Border Patrol agents refusing to get a jab and getting fired,\u201d Roy said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Texas congressman added, \u201cSo why am I going to go in there and play sit down, stand up, fight, fight, fight? Look at you, Mr. President, when you\u2019re screwing the American people every day, I\u2019m not going to participate in this kind of a sham.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Multiple other members have chosen not to attend,\u00a0<a title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/22\/cotton-rubio-among-those-planning-to-boycott-joe-bidens-state-of-the-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">including<\/a>\u00a0Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tom Cotton (R-AR).<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) said in an interview on Tuesday he \u201cprobably\u201d would not attend. \u201cI think I\u2019m probably watching it from my apartment quite frankly,\u201d Long said.<\/p>\n<p>Long was wearing a St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital tie signed by former President Donald Trump as he explained that he was \u201crelegated up to the gallery\u201d this year, despite RSVPing \u201cthe very first day,\u201d because of the State of the Union social distancing rules.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Typically the gallery area of the House chamber, where the annual address takes place, is reserved for guests, but some congressmembers have been assigned to sit in that section of the chamber this year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI always sit on the aisle. I always wear my St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Center tie, and I had President Trump sign it last time, and he signed one before for me and we auctioned it off for $15,000 and gave the money for St. Jude,\u201d Long explained. \u201cSo it\u2019s a tradition to always see the big guy sitting on the aisle with his St. Jude\u2019s tie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other Republican members suggested in interviews with Breitbart News on Tuesday that they would attempt to go \u2014 considering the Constitution specifies that the president must \u201cperiodically\u201d give Congress updates on the state of the union \u2014 but that they did not plan to adhere to certain mandates.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said he does not support the testing requirement for the address. Jordan said it seemed arbitrary and therefore \u201cridiculous\u201d considering that rule is not in place when all congressmembers are together in one room on other occasions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Asked if he plans to go, Jordan said, \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens. I\u2019m not going to go get the test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) said he is \u201con the bubble\u201d for the address, noting that when the mask mandate was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/28\/u-s-capitol-ditches-masks-ahead-of-bidens-state-of-the-union-address\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped<\/a> last-minute on Sunday he at that point intended to go, but then he noticed his ticket was designated for the gallery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a member of Congress. They\u2019re going to admit me to the floor or I won\u2019t be there,\u201d Bishop said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) quipped when asked if he planned to go to the address, \u201cWe\u2019ll see if they let me in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Republican congressmembers all spoke to Breitbart News at a town hall media event in the Rayburn building of the U.S. Capitol complex Tuesday afternoon.
