The price of one gallon of gas <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">reached<\/a> $3.62 Tuesday, more than a dollar higher than on March 1, 2021. Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/20\/keystone-xl-pipeline-scrapped-again\/\">announced<\/a> on his first day in office that he would prevent the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport Canadian oil to Gulf Coast refineries, and imposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/22\/joe-biden-suspends-oil-gas-lease-permits-sixty-days-climate-change\/\">moratorium<\/a> on natural gas drilling on federal lands.<\/p>\n<p>Republican California Rep. Doug LaMalfa noted the impact of increased energy prices on his home district. Gas in California <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/?state=CA\">reached<\/a> an average of $4.84 per gallon, costing more than $5 per gallon in several counties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, as a farmer in my real life, I\u2019ve seen my fertilizer prices go up at least 80%, my energy for my tractors, energy for running electric pumps, and that\u2019s everybody in farming, everybody in manufacturing, everybody that drives a car to school, to work. One of the cornerstone things President Biden could do is aggressive, positive energy policy for our country. That would ripple through a lot of things,\u201d LaMalfa told the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Lloyd Smucker told the Daily Caller that Biden could lift the moratorium \u201ctoday,\u201d and allow companies to open liquefied natural gas facilities in addition to renewed drilling.<\/p>\n<p>However, he added, energy companies have redirected resources as a result of the regulatory environment, but added \u201cthat could be changed quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a booming natural gas industry, but that has slowed tremendously. We have very few rigs in the state, very few wells being dug,\u201d Smucker explained. \u201cWe would need new pipelines, which had been put in place, but have since been stopped. Dan Newhouse told the Daily Caller. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/27\/state-department-says-nord-stream-2-will-not-move-forward-if-russia-invades-ukraine\/\"><strong>(RELATED: State Department Says Nord Stream 2 \u2018Will Not Move Forward\u2019 If Russia Invades Ukraine)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re going to take resources away from this dictator in Putin, we need to be able to not only be energy independent ourselves, but also help out our allies around the world make up the difference for those imports that they also take in from Russia. So, it\u2019s a huge responsibility, but we have an opportunity to do that, and we should,\u201d Newhouse said.<\/p>\n<p>Republican New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis pointed to top Democrats\u2019 opposition to nuclear energy as a contributing factor to high energy prices, noting that former Gov. Andrew Cuomo <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/01\/09\/new-york-forcing-nuclear-power-plant-to-close\/\">shut<\/a> down the Indian Point nuclear power <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=47776\">plant<\/a> in April 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSure enough, we\u2019re seeing the local energy company talk about increasing electricity rates as a result. Nuclear energy is clean energy, and it was stupid of Gov. Cuomo to close Indian Point,\u201d Malliotakis said, adding that she would work to reopen the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Several House Republicans also cited the role of nuclear power in American energy independence, calling for an \u201call-of-the-above\u201d approach to energy that includes oil, natural gas and nuclear.<\/p>\n<p>Germany, Italy and several other European countries were reportedly hesitant to sanction Russia over its invasion of Ukraine due to concerns that they would lose access to Russian energy. Germany in particular is heavily dependent on Russia for its energy supply, receiving 55% of its <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/02\/25\/ukraine-invasion-russia-germany-natural-gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">natural gas<\/a>, 53% of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/how-much-does-germany-need-russian-gas-2022-01-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coal<\/a>, and 34% of its oil from Russian sources.<\/p>\n<p>Although Germany is now blocking the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, other sanctions have not <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/25\/white-house-russia-sanctions-oil-gas-industry\/\">targeted<\/a> the Russian energy sector. Russia is the biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/natural-gas-by-country\">natural gas<\/a> exporter, and the third-biggest oil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/company-insights\/082316\/worlds-top-10-oil-exporters.asp\">exporter<\/a> in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-60564781\">announced<\/a> Monday that his country would no longer import Russian oil.
