The 30-year-old reality star shared news of his engagement to boyfriend, political strategist Jordan C. Brown, exclusively to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tv\/colton-underwood-engaged-to-jordan-c-brown\/\"><span>People<\/span><\/a><span> on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cBachelor\u201d alum came out as gay in April 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAfter my birthday, Jordan and I went to Big Sur for a weekend getaway to decompress and relax in nature,\u201d Underwood told People in the interview. \u201cI couldn\u2019t have pictured a more beautiful place to celebrate an amazing milestone in my life and relationship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m extremely happy! 2021 was the most transformative year of my life,\u201d he continued. \u201cStarting 2022 off with my best friend, teammate and now fianc\u00e9 is something I never thought was going to be possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Underwood and Brown both shared news of their engagement on their social media pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe only time in my life I\u2019m ok with wasting a bottle of champagne. I love you babe,\u201d Brown wrote alongside an image of the couple spraying a champagne bottle in celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cBachelor\u201d star documented his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/i-have-white-privilege-bachelor-alum-colton-underwood-addresses-backlash-against-new-series-coming-out-colton\"><span>coming out story<\/span><\/a><span> in the Netflix series \u201cComing Out Colton\u201d in December. Later, he issued an apology for allegedly exhibiting \u201cwhite privilege\u201d by being part of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI see the criticism,\u201d Underwood said during an interview on the \u201cCall Her Daddy\u201d podcast. \u201cI know that people are upset that I have white privilege and I got a series after coming out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201cBachelor\u201d star admitted that his status may have affected how the public received his big announcement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI couldn\u2019t imagine what it\u2019s like to be someone from an underprivileged area to have to come out, and not only risk losing their football [career] but risk losing a house and food and money,\u201d Underwood said. \u201cI never wanted to compare my trauma to anybody else. I just wanted to get my side out there and my story out there, to say, \u2018Hey, this is what I\u2019ve been through.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, critics saw \u201cComing Out Colton\u201d as a ruthless money grab that just capitalized on the star\u2019s popularity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s all so calculated,\u201d Esquire writer Justin Kirkland said while reviewing the series. \u201c[The series] moves too fast, refuses to get deep, and breezes over the fact that no actual drama unfolds\u2014which, by the way, is a good thing for real lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He also mentioned that \u201cComing Out Colton\u201d could be a feeble attempt to rehabilitate Underwood\u2019s image, which suffered after \u201cBachelor\u201d filming concluded. The former professional football player picked Cassie Randolph to receive the final rose during the \u201cBachelor\u201d finale in 2019. Then in September 2020, Randolph filed a restraining order against Underwood, claiming he had put a tracking device on her car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe has used this journey for personal gain, quick wealth, and celebrity,\u201d the writer concluded.
