His address tomorrow will build on a wave of climate actions we&#8217;ve taken to start 2022. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7xEipg3xy1\">https:\/\/t.co\/7xEipg3xy1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gina McCarthy (@ginamccarthy46) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ginamccarthy46\/status\/1498425563945611264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The White House\u2019s current agenda has already <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/11\/joe-biden-could-bring-down-gas-prices-tomorrow-hes-choosing-not-to\/\">raised<\/a> power prices to seven-year highs. <\/p>\n<p>Absent from the pre-release, which touts offshore wind, electric vehicles, and costly new regulation, was any mention of the energy independence forfeited by the administration within the last year.<\/p>\n<p>After Biden shut down the Keystone XL Pipeline and suspended oil and gas leases on federal land, the U.S. doubled is imports of Russian oil, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&#038;s=MTTIM_NUS-NRS_2&#038;f=M\">according <\/a>to the Energy Information Administration. The writers at PolitiFact rated the claim \u201cmostly false\u201d despite its own explanation of the score saying the opposite: \u201cThe U.S. did double the amount of crude oil imported from Russia last year.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>In December, the U.S. imported more than 400,000 barrels of Russian oil on average daily. The Keystone Pipeline, in contrast, transported <a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/texas\/tag\/keystone-xl-pipeline\/\">830,000 barrels<\/a>\u00a0at peak capacity from the Canadian Tar Sands. <\/p>\n<p>After the president suppressed domestic production, leading to high power prices throughout his tenure, the White House has maintained its refusal to interrupt global energy markets with sanctions on Russian oil and gas, the world\u2019s third-leading oil producers responsible for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=709&#038;t=6\">11 percent<\/a> of the world\u2019s supply. In a press call on Monday morning, the White House made that clear. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll continue to scope out measures to allow for steady energy supplies to global markets,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2022\/02\/28\/background-press-call-by-senior-administration-officials-on-new-economic-restrictive-measures-on-russia\/\">said<\/a> a senior administration official, with energy transactions exempt from financial sanctions. <\/p>\n<p>The Energy Information Administration forecasts that this year, the United States will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=51338\">net importer<\/a> of oil \u2014 a reversal from a brief stint as a net-exporter when the United States achieved energy independence during the Trump years. <\/p>\n<p>Faced with an electorate antagonized by high gas prices as a consequence of the administration\u2019s animosity toward fossil fuels, Biden will likely only go after the Russian energy sector as a last resort. Doing otherwise in the absence of a radical shift in White House energy strategy would inflict undue harm on American consumers and create a political nightmare beyond the red wave already expected during the November midterms. <\/p>\n<p>The European shift to green energy in the form of wind and solar already gave the continent a crisis last year when it was hit with a low-wind winter. The European Union\u2019s enhanced reliance on Russian natural gas to fill the gaps for instantaneous power generation <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/07\/how-green-energy-fantasies-have-put-the-world-at-the-brink-of-war\/\">spell disaster.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>According to numbers from the Russian Finance Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/russias-oil-gas-revenue-windfall-2022-01-21\/\">reported<\/a> by Reuters, oil and gas revenues generated $119 billion for the Kremlin, some at the courtesy of the American taxpayer, even as Moscow restricted supply to Europe to artificially spike prices and keep European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruegel.org\/2021\/12\/how-serious-is-europes-natural-gas-storage-shortfall\/\">reserves<\/a> low ahead of its Ukraine invasion.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., such a transition to wind and solar has brought <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/09\/07\/how-refusing-to-wisely-manage-californias-resources-led-to-incessant-blackouts\/\">rolling blackouts<\/a> and the failure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/04\/12\/yes-overreliance-on-wind-and-solar-helped-feed-texass-power-outages\/\">Texas power grid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Shellenberger, the president of Environmental Progress, explained in a guest post for Bari Weiss\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bariweiss.substack.com\/\">Substack column<\/a> on Tuesday how Russian President Vladimir Putin exploited the West\u2019s obsession with \u201cgoing green.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the West\u2019s focus on healing the planet with \u2018soft energy\u2019 renewables, and moving away from natural gas and nuclear, that allowed Putin to gain a stranglehold over Europe\u2019s energy supply,\u201d Shellenberger wrote. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cAs the west fell into a hypnotic trance about healing its relationship with nature, averting climate apocalypse and <a href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJwlkc2OhSAMhZ_msrsE8H_BYjbzGgahaucqGqg6ztMPakJOgfak5cMagmEJp16XSOySls4VtIcjTkAEgW0RQotO501WykaxtHOyLmqGse0DwGxw0hQ2YOvWTWgN4eIvgypFllds1M46C4WQShSi7GRlM1mJThhZW9cUsn_6ms0heAsadgjn4oFNeiRa4yv7eqnvtI7j4P4knCFyu8zpBn2a0FjCHdJJCSVSkDKJUElmM5g_9FduCEDmTePmOwjD-zbuCAcfaZ4Y6uRVIhNSliKXGVdc2arKGtmXonB9LQ0_pt_9o3L1ysU8KB63LpKxn2sSFjTMOJ38x8QRffycqWi4wNzZxKVNcd480tmCN90E7kFGD_gbYjuAT68hcK0hLcu8lIWoVFPW-UPo_oSiqFSlWGrvluTyujMBD8AY_wFsgZqi\">worshipping<\/a> a teenager named Greta, Vladimir Putin made his moves.
