The Communist Party began a genocide against the Uyghur people of East Turkistan and other Muslim groups in the region in 2017, which has continued to this day. International legal experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/12\/09\/tribunal-olympics-host-china-beyond-a-reasonable-doubt-guilty-of-genocide\/\">concluded<\/a> at a tribunal in December that China had committed genocide \u201cbeyond a reasonable doubt,\u201d citing the Communist Party\u2019s extensively documented use of concentration camps to imprison, torture, sterilize, and enslave Uyghur people.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Partly in response to the intense international campaign against the \u201cGenocide Games,\u201d the event <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2022\/02\/22\/nolte-genocide-games-sign-off-with-worst-viewership-ever-for-nbcuniversal\/\">recorded<\/a> its lowest ratings in American history. (AP Photo\/Ng Han Guan)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A security person stands near the Olympic flags during a ceremony to mark the arrival of the Olympic flag and start of the flag tour for the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022 at a section of the Great Wall of China in Beijing Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018 (AP Photo\/Ng Han Guan).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Paralympic Games, which typically have generated less international interest than the Olympics, are set to begin this week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Global Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202202\/1253364.shtml\">suggested<\/a> that the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia could prove an opportunity to promote the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2022 Winter Paralympics will be held in Beijing from March 4 to 13, and China could use it as a chance to play a bigger role for peace mediation and make the Olympics a platform to realize peace, said some Chinese experts,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202202\/1253364.shtml\">claimed<\/a>. The newspaper did not specify how the Paralympics could become a \u201cplatform\u201d to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.<\/p>\n<p>Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, colonizing its Crimean peninsula and arming proxies that have waged war against the Ukrainian army since then in the Donbas region. Last week, Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced that he would push Russian troops into the entirety of Ukraine after recognizing his proxies in Donetsk and Luhansk as sovereign states, then claiming those \u201ccountries\u201d requested Russian military aid against Ukraine. The state newspaper explained this stance by contending that maintaining some support for Ukraine grants China greater leverage in the conflict.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChina\u2019s stance of neutrality is important because if there is one country that can one day effectively mediate the conflict, that country should be one with real neutrality and which respects Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty,\u201d the <em>Times<\/em> claimed, \u201cand also did not follow the West in sanctioning Russia and harming the livelihood of Russian people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Global Times<\/em> appeared to lament that China has no significant role in the ongoing war.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWestern voices should not be allowed to dominate the voice of the international community over the Ukraine situation,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Global Times<\/em> argued,\u00a0\u201cas Western powers, especially the US and NATO, have actually been the key forces in instigating the crisis and contradiction between Russia and Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state newspaper also argued that America \u201cdoesn\u2019t want to see the conflict end quickly as it wants Russia to be mired in trouble as long as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China has attempted to maintain friendly relations with both Russia and Ukraine throughout the conflict. On the one hand, China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/02\/25\/china-lifts-all-wheat-import-restrictions-russia-ukraine-crisis\/\">facilitated<\/a> Russia\u2019s ability to export wheat to China last week in an attempt to buoy its economy against Western sanctions. China also abstained in a United Nations Security Council vote to condemn Russia for its violence in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>China has not offered any material support to Russia, however, openly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/xwfw_665399\/s2510_665401\/2511_665403\/202202\/t20220225_10645705.html\">rejecting<\/a> Russia\u2019s claims that Donetsk and Luhansk are legitimate states and defending Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity. Chinese propaganda cartoons <a href=\"http:\/\/en.people.cn\/n3\/2022\/0228\/c90000-9963393.html\">appear<\/a> to show Crimea as part of Ukraine eight years after Russia \u201cannexed\u201d it; the Chinese government typically responds with outrage and economic <a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2019\/10\/17\/china-bullies-christian-dior-apologizing-omitting-taiwan-map\/\">sanctions<\/a> when international actors exclude territories it falsely claims as China, such as Taiwan, from their maps.<\/p>\n<p>In remarks shortly after the assault on Ukraine began last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying insisted, \u201cTaiwan is for sure not Ukraine.\u201d China considers Taiwan \u2013 a sovereign state with no ties to Beijing \u2013 a rogue \u201cprovince,\u201d much like Putin declared Ukraine has \u201cno tradition\u201d of being a country. Hua said, \" Whatever changes Taiwan may go through \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying (Kyodo via AP Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hua <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/02\/24\/china-russia-ukraine-youre-on-your-own\/\">asserted<\/a> on Thursday that China would not aid Russia with any military assets.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the current assault, China maintained complex relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
