The move is part of the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/draft-online-safety-bill\">recently announced Online Safety Bill<\/a> that is designed to help users avoid anonymous trolls on the internet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>UK Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Nadine Dorries said in a statement:\u00a0\u201cTech firms have a responsibility to stop anonymous trolls polluting their platforms. People will now have more control over who can contact them and be able to stop the tidal wave of hate served up to them by rogue algorithms.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The tech giants would need to develop a system allowing them to verify IDs when a user creates a new account. The UK government suggested facial recognition via profile pictures, a two-factor authentication system, and a government-issued ID verification. Ofcom, the UK\u2019s media regulator, will be overseeing the rules that the tech companies will have to follow. Ending anonymity could have a chilling effect on speech for people that choose to remain anonymous, especially in the era of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/03\/nolte-72-of-americans-say-cancel-culture-is-out-of-control\/\">out of control cancel culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK government has proposed measures that would force the tech firms to remove \u201clegal but harmful\u201d material. Tech firms that violate rules set out by UK regulators could face fines of up to 10 percent of their global annual revenues, which could be billions of dollars for companies like Google and Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>A Twitter spokesperson commented to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/24\/uk-online-safety-bill-new-plans-unveiled-to-tackle-anonymous-trolls.html\">CNBC<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cWe are reviewing the details of the new proposed duties.
