It was the media who furthered Cuomo\u2019s status as hero of the pandemic, someone who spoke with truth and honesty, and acted as the leader we \u201cneeded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here is a look back through the sycophantic and adoring media coverage Cuomo received until it was necessary to find a new scapegoat for Democratic policy failures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CNN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Writing one day before Andrew Cuomo enforced his disastrous nursing home policy, CNN\u2019s Chris Cillizza wrote a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/03\/24\/politics\/andrew-cuomo-new-york-coronavirus\/index.html\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a> <span>titled \u201cEveryone needs to see Andrew Cuomo\u2019s inspiring words on the fight against coronavirus,\u201d saying that \u201c<\/span><span>Trump cares deeply about Trump. What he perceives as good for him is what he is inclined to do. Andrew Cuomo, in his words on Tuesday, is offering another path: To believe in all of us, knowing that by protecting the least among us we are showing ourselves and the world how America fights and wins these toughest of battles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In May, Cillizza penned another \u201canalysis\u201d<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/01\/politics\/andrew-cuomo-coronavirus-poll\/index.html\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a> <span>titled \u201cAndrew Cuomo may be the single most popular politician in America right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCuomo\u2019s daily press briefings on the state of the state\u2019s fight against the virus have become must-see TV \u2014 as Cuomo ranges from stern father to loving counselor to frank friend and back. He has also benefited from radical transparency about what he knows and doesn\u2019t know about the state\u2019s fight against the coronavirus. And from his naturally micromanaging style,\u201d Cillizza wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>New York Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Again, one day before the enforcement of his nursing home policy which resulted in thousands of COVID-19 deaths, Cuomo was lauded by the New York Times. In a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/24\/nyregion\/governor-andrew-cuomo-coronavirus.html\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a> <span>titled \u201cHow Cuomo, Once on Sidelines, Became the Politician of the Moment,\u201d Cuomo\u2019s briefings were described as \u201carticulate, consistent and often tinged with empathy.\u201d \u201c<\/span><span>The same blunt and sometimes paternalistic traits that have long rubbed his critics raw have morphed into a source of comfort,\u201d the piece continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As the Cuomo brothers partnered to promote Gov. Cuomo as a successful leader, the New York Times obliged,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/05\/business\/media\/brothers-cuomo-andrew-chris.html\"><span>with<\/span><\/a> <span>\u201cAmericans Don\u2019t Trust the Media Anymore. So Why Do They Trust the Cuomos?\u201d The piece described the interviews as \u201criveting,\u201d while simultaneously celebrating that Gov. Cuomo \u201c<\/span><span>also bragged that he is their mother\u2019s favorite and that Chris \u2014 Christopher, he calls him \u2014 was the family \u2018meatball.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In March 2020, Katrina vanden Heuvel wrote an opinion<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/03\/31\/can-andrew-cuomo-become-fdr\/\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a> <span>titled \u201cCuomo could be the leader the Democratic Party and nation desperately need,\u201d describing the governor as \u201cclear, compassionate and inspiring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In July, Jennifer Rubin wrote an opinion<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/07\/02\/no-one-does-it-like-cuomo\/\"><span>column<\/span><\/a> <span>titled \u201cNo one does it like Andrew Cuomo,\u201d which applauded the \u201c<\/span><span>Remarkable success in lowering the rates of infection, hospitalization and deaths in New York.\u201d Rubin concluded by calling for a president who \u201ctalked and governed\u201d like Andrew Cuomo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFor nearly an hour, he went on like this \u2014 brutally honest and entirely pragmatic. Take responsibility. Don\u2019t grandstand. Operate on facts. Change what you are doing to meet the real issues of the moment. The approach works for the pandemic. It works for police reform. Now imagine we had a president who talked and governed that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>New Yorker<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In October, in a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2020\/10\/19\/andrew-cuomo-the-king-of-new-york\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a> <span>titled \u201cAndrew Cuomo, The King Of New York,\u201d Nick Paumgarten wrote, \u201cCuomo, by leaning on data, brandishing logic, speaking in paragraphs, and expressing something like human feeling, had stepped into the void left by the federal government\u2019s cynical and capricious response. In the land of the incoherent, the silver-tongued man is king.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vanity Fair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In late April, Chris Smith<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2020\/04\/cover-story-how-andrew-cuomo-became-the-coronavirus-trump-antidote\"><span>published<\/span><\/a> <span>\u201c\u2018I\u2019m a Chief Executive Who Has to Get Stuff Done\u2019: How Andrew Cuomo Became the Coronavirus Trump Antidote.\u201d The subheading read \u201c<\/span><span>The New York governor\u2019s impassioned coronavirus briefings, an essential counterpoint to the Trump circus, draw on a lifetime of political combat, reflecting lessons learned from Bill Clinton, the Kennedys, and most of all his late father, mentor, and model, Mario.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vogue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In late March, Molly Jong-Fast<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/andrew-cuomo-why-we-love-him-now-coronavirus\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a> <span>\u201cWhy We Are Crushing on Andrew Cuomo Right Now,\u201d saying \u201cwhat a difference a pandemic makes\u201d when explaining why \u201call of a sudden, I love Governor Cuomo.\u201d Jong-Fast celebrated \u201cAndrew bantering with his brother Chris on CNN<\/span> <span>about which son wasn\u2019t calling their mother enough right now or which one was held in higher standing back home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s something nice about having someone in government whom you can actually trust. Yes, Andrew Cuomo may be imperfect, but he\u2019s still the closest thing we have to an FDR for our time,\u201d she wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CNBC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>On April 7, Dan Gardner wrote a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/06\/what-new-york-governor-andrew-cuomo-teaches-us-about-how-to-speak-lead-in-coronavirus-pandemic.html\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a> <span>for CNBC titled \u201cHate him or love him \u2014 New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo can teach us a lot about how to speak during a pandemic.\u201d After referencing Winston Churchill\u2019s leadership, Gardner then argued that Cuomo understood that he was not leading in \u201cordinary times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs the third-term governor of a state now hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic, and who was once widely perceived to be wearing out his welcome, Cuomo\u2019s political star could easily be plunging,\u201d stated Gardner. \u201cBut the opposite is happening, thanks to his textbook demonstration of how leaders should speak in a time of crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jezebel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>On March 19, Rebecca Fishbein wrote a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jezebel.com\/help-i-think-im-in-love-with-andrew-cuomo-1842396411\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a> <span>titled \u201cHelp, I Think I\u2019m In Love With Andrew Cuomo???\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd yet, in this time of crisis, with little concrete information available, I need Cuomo\u2019s measured bullying, his love of circumventing the federal government, his sparring with<\/span> <span>increasingly<\/span> <span>incompetent city leadership. Not only that, but the less contact I have with other humans, the more I start to think of Cuomo as my only friend,\u201d Fishbein said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ve started laughing at his little jokes. I catch myself touching my hair (not my face!) when he talks about an increase in testing capacity. I swooned when he told a reporter he had his own workout routine. I have watched a clip of him and<\/span> <span>brother<\/span> <span>Chris Cuomo bickering about their mother at least 20 times. I think I have a crush???\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Politico<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>On March 23, Bill Mahoney published \u201cAndrew Cuomo, social media superstar,\u201d which read: \u201cThere\u2019s also a clear void for Cuomo to fill. President Donald Trump has failed to win over the Democrats who have long loathed him, and comments that he doesn\u2019t take responsibility for his administration\u2019s failures during the pandemic have given critics fodder to argue that he\u2019s not a leader.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe other New York elected official who might become a national icon during a crisis centered in the state is New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio,\u201d Mahoney continued. \u201cBut de Blasio has bungled chances to emerge as a spiritual leader through actions such as his decision to go the gym as recently as last Monday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
