Bernie Sanders has been unable to advance a top-down, government takeover of our nation\u2019s health care system, so like-minded California lawmakers attempted a state version that would have ended private health insurance, forced Medicare participants into a new experimental system, and put the government in charge of Californian\u2019s health care. Fortunately for California health care consumers, the proposal\u2014called CalCare\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kron4.com\/news\/california\/bill-to-create-universal-health-care-system-in-california-fails\/\">failed to secure enough votes<\/a>, sending single-payer advocates back to square one.<\/p>\n<p>This should be a wake-up call for Californians who cherish health care freedom and choice. Had CalCare passed, Californians would have seen a dramatic rise in their cost-of-living, increased state deficits and critical healthcare wait times, and exacerbated doctor shortages.<\/p>\n<p>The current California <a href=\"https:\/\/ebudget.ca.gov\/FullBudgetSummary.pdf\">state budget<\/a> proposal for the fiscal year 2022 is $286 billion. A 2017 single-payer proposal similar to CalCare had an estimated $400 billion price tag, more than the entire state budget.<\/p>\n<p>To pay for CalCare, supporters had proposed the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CalTax\/status\/1479152853591543810?s=20\">largest<\/a> tax increase in California history, roughly doubling taxes and taking another $12,250 from every state household, <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/california-health-care-tax-proposal\/\">according<\/a> to the Tax Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>This tax hike plan included a new graduated payroll tax system with the top rate kicking in for employees with only $49,990 of income, a gross receipts tax on businesses, and additional surtaxes on income over $149,509.<\/p>\n<p>While this would have been a massive tax increase on the middle class, it was only <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/california-health-care-tax-proposal\/\">expected<\/a> to bring in an additional $163 billion per year, billions short of the funds needed for the new program.<\/p>\n<p>What would Californians get for paying these exorbitant taxes? Not better health care.<\/p>\n<p>Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegonewsdesk.com\/2022\/01\/assembly-leader-waldron-calls-out-california-government-takeover-of-healthcare\/\">said<\/a> she looked forward to the CalCare debate and \u201chow much taxes will increase on the middle class, how many people will be kicked off their current health care plan, what Democrats will say to the seniors whose Medicare funds will be raided, how long wait times will be, the extent to which bureaucrats will ration care and how many hospitals will close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to hearing Democrats explain how they plan to successfully take over more than 10 percent of the state\u2019s economy when in the last decade they\u2019ve proven themselves incapable of simple things like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assembly.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=98b5dbaba95f9c1b87e48a252&#038;id=ea9683105a&#038;e=7921ac7bbf\">building a railroad<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assembly.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=98b5dbaba95f9c1b87e48a252&#038;id=3ddecf5e78&#038;e=7921ac7bbf\">providing clean drinking water<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/environment\/2020\/08\/california-2020-rolling-blackouts-explainer\/\">keeping the lights on<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assembly.us3.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=98b5dbaba95f9c1b87e48a252&#038;id=e0d7d90b8a&#038;e=7921ac7bbf\">filling potholes<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The editors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2022\/01\/09\/california-state-government-isnt-competent-enough-to-run-health-care\/\">Orange County Register<\/a> agreed. \u201cIt\u2019d be one thing for the state of California to consider such a sweeping endeavor with a consistent track record of immense success, transparency, and efficiency,\u201d they wrote in a recent editorial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s another when the state can\u2019t figure out the basics of state government. Health care, obviously, is very important. It is often literally\u00a0a matter of life and death. . . This isn\u2019t a ban on plastic straws we\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steep cost-of-living increase due to the rising taxes as well as pay cuts that medical practitioners could have expected under a single-payer system would have increased California\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/projects\/californias-worsening-physician-shortage-doctors\/\">doctor shortage<\/a>. Even the New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/04\/10\/upshot\/medicare-for-all-bernie-sanders-cost-estimates.html?mtrref=undefined&#038;gwh=33FD0F06D75C934F0798ED667043E782&#038;gwt=pay&#038;assetType=PAYWALL\">acknowledged<\/a> doctors would likely have to take pay cuts under a government-run system stating that \u201canalysts across the board agree single-payer would cut revenue for doctors.\u201d Just as other businesses are leaving California for more business-friendly states, tax increases and revenue cuts would have caused California doctors to take their expertise and experience elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of limiting choice under a single-payer system, states should expand the options available to individuals. Whether it\u2019s expanding telehealth, allowing doctors and nurses to practice across state lines, and repealing needless restrictions like certificate-of-need laws that prevent hospitals from expanding to meet patient demand, people need more options not less. Instead of a one-size-fits-all public option, we need a strong personal option, so people have greater control over their healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>The saying, \u201cas California goes, so goes the nation,\u201d refers to California\u2019s role as a social and political trendsetter.
