Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/GettyImages-1229416345-640x335-1.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">France intercepted and detained a Russian cargo ship in the English Channel in the early hours of Saturday morning, amid increasing tension between the West and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>A 127-metre long ship flying the Russian flag named \u201cBaltic Leader\u201d was diverted by French border officials at around 2 am on Saturday morning as they were patrolling for illegal boat migrants in the English Channel off the coast of the Calais region, FranceBleu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francebleu.fr\/infos\/international\/un-bateau-russe-intercepte-dans-les-eaux-du-detroit-du-pas-de-calais-dans-la-nuit-1645865594\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>A spokeswoman for France\u2019s Maritime Prefect office,\u00a0V\u00e9ronique Magnin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/international\/europe\/les-sanctions-europeennes-tombent-un-bateau-russe-intercepte-dans-la-manche-20220226_J3LHBKUL2BFULB73VIHPUSLGP4\/\">told<\/a> the Agence France-Presse news agency that the boat was \u201cstrongly suspected of being linked to Russian interests targeted by sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Russian state media, the\u00a0RIA news agency, the Russian embassy in France <a href=\"https:\/\/ria.ru\/20220226\/perekhvat-1775243260.html\">confirmed<\/a> that a Russian commercial vessel has been detained by French Customs and that the embassy has contacted authorities in France for clarification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe embassy received an emergency call from the captain of a Russian bulk carrier, in which he reported the detention of the ship by the French authorities in the English Channel,\u201d the embassy said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Despite tough talk over Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, the European Union is squabbling internally over whether to include luxury goods and diamonds in sanctions, while there is reluctance on all sides to restrict energy imports. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PorsvKcVSg\">https:\/\/t.co\/PorsvKcVSg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1497270759600889863?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking to the BBC, an official in France\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/world-europe-60517447\">said<\/a>: \u201cA 127 meters long Russia cargo ship called the \u2018Baltic Leader\u2019 transporting cars has been intercepted overnight by the French Navy in the Channel and escorted to the Port of Boulogne-Sur-Mer in Northern France.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been taken to the French port after a request by the French government because it is suspected of belonging to a company targeted by EU sanctions against Moscow. French border forces are currently investigating the cargo ship.
