In recent weeks, Democrats have floated several black women for SCOTUS, including Ketanji Brown Jackson, J. Michelle Childs, and Leondra Kruger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur process is going to be rigorous. I will select a nominee worthy of Justice Breyer\u2019s legacy of excellence and decency,\u201d Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/retiring-us-justice-breyer-appear-with-biden-white-house-2022-01-27\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in January. \u201cWhile I\u2019ve been studying candidates\u2019 backgrounds and writings, I\u2019ve made no decision except one: the person I nominate will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity \u2014 and that person will be the first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court. It\u2019s long overdue, in my view.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If confirmed, Jackson would be the first black woman on the Supreme Court. At the age of 51-years-old, Jackson would also be one of the youngest judges \u2014 with Trump nominee Amy Coney Barrett being the youngest at the age of 50-years-old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>An exemplary educational background<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Jackson was born in 1970 in Washington, D.C., and moved with her family some years later to Florida. She graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High School in Florida in 1988, \u201cwhere other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/02\/23\/who-is-ketanji-brown-jackson-bio-facts-background-political-views-00010970\"><span>notable alumni<\/span><\/a><span> include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, two-time U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, as well as a number of former Olympians and professional athletes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jackson received a bachelor\u2019s degree in government at Harvard University, and graduated in 1992. She also received her law degree from Harvard in 1996, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Jackson%20Senate%20Judiciary%20Questionnaire1.pdf\"><span>serving<\/span><\/a><span> as the supervising editor of the Harvard Law Review from 1995 to 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Legal and judicial experience<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Jackson was first nominated for a district court judgeship in Washington D.C. by President Barack Obama towards the end of his first term on September 20, 2012. <\/span><span>Jackson was rated \u201c<\/span><span>Unanimously Qualified\u201d <\/span><span>for the nomination by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Ketanji_Brown_Jackson\"><span>American Bar Association<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench. I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice,\u201d Obama <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2012\/09\/20\/president-obama-nominates-two-united-states-district-courts\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> of Jackson and two other nominations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jackson served as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, before being nominated by Joe Biden to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit less than one year ago, on April 19, 2021. Jackson was confirmed by a 53-44 vote of the U.S. Senate on June 14, 2021, with 48 Democrats and three Republicans voting in favor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition, Jackson\u2019s experience includes serving as Vice-Chair\/Commissioner for the U.S. Sentencing Commission for 2010-2014, and clerking for Stephen Breyer in 1999-2000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Guantanamo Bay<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Working as a public defender from 2005 to 2007, Jackson was assigned to represent Khi Ali Gul, an Afghan detained in Guantanamo Bay in 2003 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/21\/world\/americas\/four-afghans-released-from-guantnamo-bay.html\"><span>released<\/span><\/a><span> by President Obama in 2014 when she was no longer involved in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cShe also filed briefs in cases involving other Guant\u00e1namo detainees while working in private practice,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/27\/4-issues-that-could-come-up-ketanji-brown-jackson-confirmation-fight\/\"><span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span> reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn her 2012 hearing, Sen. Charles E.
