The \u201cunprecedented\u201d actions target Russian financial institutions and oligarchs, <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0608\">according<\/a> to the Department of the Treasury.<\/p>\n<p>Biden said during his remarks that Americans may face higher energy costs as a result of the sanctions. (Brendan Smialowski\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Still, the president vowed to work with oil producing and consuming countries to secure supplies moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Russia is Europe\u2019s single largest supplier of crude oil and natural gas, <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to European Union statistics. Russia also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/pet_move_neti_a_EP00_IMN_mbblpd_m.htm\">sends<\/a> the most amount of oil to the U.S. of any country other than Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The fossil fuel industry provided a whopping 39% of Russia\u2019s federal budget and accounted for 60% of its total exports in 2019, the BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20211115-climate-change-can-russia-leave-fossil-fuels-behind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. fossil fuel industry <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/24\/fossil-fuel-industry-oil-gas-production-russia-ukraine\/\">issued calls<\/a> for the Biden administration to reverse its energy policies and begin incentivizing domestic oil and gas drilling amid the Ukraine crisis.
