The studio kicked off that marketing push with one of the savviest stunts in recent history.<\/p>\n<p>The team played off the beloved meme of three Spider-Men pointing at one another, but this time featuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/tom-holland-andrew-garfield-tobey-maguire-recreate-spider-man-pointing-meme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three actors who play the wall-crawler in \u201cNo Way Home.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Life imitates art. All three Spider-Men have recreated the infamous meme. \ud83d\udc4f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/E7GNnGQ2HU\">pic.twitter.com\/E7GNnGQ2HU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 GameSpot (@GameSpot) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GameSpot\/status\/1496534114740191234?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 23, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Social media went wild over the image.<\/p>\n<p>The image is playful, apolitical and ties directly into the film\u2019s goodwill toward its audience. \u201cNo Way Home\u201d dropped the woke flourishes from the past two Spidey films, focusing squarely on entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>That, plus a nostalgia trip to past \u201cSpider-Man\u201d adventures, made it a sensation.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s success seems simple in retrospect, but the timing matters. The unstoppable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/kevin-feige-chris-evans-twitter-woke\/\">MCU has gone woke<\/a>, focusing on diversity, lectures and other progressive tropes that cut into the franchise\u2019s box office fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>Movies like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/eternals-review\/\">Eternals<\/a>\u201d made far less than expected \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt9032400\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$164 million<\/a> is an abysmal take for an MCU release. Some \u00a0MCU stars have taken direct aim at select movie goers, too, via their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/mcu-silent-disney-china-mulan\/\">political broadsides<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpider-Man\u201d showed Hollywood that superhero films could still make serious coin at the box office, with or without a pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more to the story, though.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/hollywood-china-box-office\/\"><strong>RELATED: Hollywood Sold Its Soul to China: Now What?\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hollywood once relied on China to bolster its box office fortunes. \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d scored an astonishing \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt4154796\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$858 million stateside but another $629 million in China<\/a>. It\u2019s upbeat, fan friendly and free of culture war broadsides.
