It shows a Russian jet that was struck by another aircraft during a 1993 airshow in England.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Russia attacked Ukraine from various directions with airstrikes, ground troops and tanks Thursday, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-putin-attack-a05e7c4563ac94b963134bba83187d46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a>. The invasion began shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a \u201cspecial military operation\u201d in Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/putin-delares-war-on-ukraine-5a28dbd5-362f-4e97-91e1-84272f7390fd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Axios<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>An image shared on Facebook shows what appears to be a pilot ejecting from a fighter jet that is exploding into a ball of fire. \u201cThis is a Russian 6th Air Force\u2019s twin engine fighter (looks like Sukkhoi Su-27) jet from shot down over Ukraine today,\u201d reads the Feb. 24 post\u2019s caption. \u201cCuriously, it has caught fire from above and the pilot appears to have ejected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian armed forces have claimed to shoot down at least six Russian planes, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/europe\/live-news\/ukraine-russia-news-02-24-22-intl\/h_12b5345ad5d6402d1e2fe5d9f90692f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>. Russian officials have denied the claim, the outlet reported. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2022\/02\/24\/fact-check-russian-paratroopers-ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Video Show Russian Paratroopers Landing In Ukraine?)\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The photo included in the post does not show a Russian jet shot down in Ukraine and predates the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. A reverse image search revealed the image was originally taken in 1993 in England during an airshow.<\/p>\n<p>The picture can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airteamimages.com\/mikoyan-gurevich-mig-29_925_russia---russian-air-force_48672.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Air Team Images<\/a>\u2018 Aviation Image Library, where the caption explains it was taken after a mid-air collision between two MiG-29 Russian jets that year. \u201cNo one was killed or seriously injured in the incident. The pilot can be seen ejecting,\u201d the caption reads.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/XhyUSnzClGk?t=273\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> of the collision can be seen in an article published by U.K.-based news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiltsglosstandard.co.uk\/news\/19480308.mig-29-fighter-planes-crash-raf-fairford-riat-1993\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard<\/a>. The two jets collided while performing loops in the air above the Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Fairford, England at the 1993 Royal International Air Tattoo, according to the article.
