Ilhan Omar (D-MN) appeared on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/ali-velshi\/watch\/rep-ilhan-omar-republicans-who-voted-to-acquit-trump-value-power-and-violence-over-democracy-101025349690\">MSNBC\u2019s \u201cVelshi\u201d<\/a> with host Mehdi Hasan to discuss her thoughts regarding Trump\u2019s second acquittal following the impeachment proceedings last week.<\/p>\n<p>The host asked Omar about the \u201ctrial without witnesses,\u201d noting that Omar drew up Articles of Impeachment on January 6. He wondered if the impeachment trial was what she had envisioned. She said it was, and that the witnesses are \u201cpart of Congress,\u201d noting that \u201cwe were all there.\u201d To call additional witnesses to testify, Omar added, \u201cwouldn\u2019t have been that much necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/this-why-we-fail-democrats-accused-caving-trump-impeachment-trial-witnesses-1569147\">Newsweek<\/a> reported, \u201cPundits and political strategists from both sides of the aisle blasted the Democrats for not allowing people like House GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to testify\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MSNBC host pressed Omar on the frustration many have expressed at the Democrats\u2019s appearance to be \u201cfolding again in the face of Republican obstructionism.\u201d Omar reminded him that many leaders in Congress were in contact with individuals on the day of the attack who may have been called to testify. \u201c90% of these conversations we are talking about are not something that would have been new information to any of the people that would have made any considerations on whether to convict or acquit this president,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Whip of the Progressive Caucus continued, \u201cThe decisions, sadly, that the Republican Party has made was a calculation based on power and violence being more valuable to them than protecting this democracy.\u201d She said that seeing \u201cnearly every single Senate Republican\u201d vote against the consideration of charges against the forty-fifth president \u201ctells us everything that we need to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar described the day of the attack and her personal experience. \u201cI was in the room with 10 of the leaders \u2013 five from the senate, five from the house..I remember Mitch and the conversations that he was having\u2026He remembers that the president did not send help\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The host noted that if Omar were president and had been accused of inciting an insurrection, Republicans would \u201cdrag [the trial] out to hurt [her].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar went on to explain that \u201cthere are calculations that people have to make\u201d regarding time that lawmakers commit to the trial, noting that \u201cwe do have other pressures of people telling us to get them the Covid relief that they need\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked about her position on the filibuster, Omar confirmed her support to end it. \u201cWe need to dramatically reform our democratic institutions,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have to end this filibuster. We have to ban gerrymandering. We have to make sure that we are removing substantial barriers from voting from low-income communities and people of color. We have to end the dominance of unchecked corporate power in politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the final moments of the interview, host Hasan brought up Omar\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/feb\/11\/us-sanctions-have-catastrophic-impact-amid-covid-say-progressive-democrats\">letter<\/a> to the Biden administration, urging them to look closely at sanctions on countries during the pandemic. The letter was authored by Omar, Rep. Jes\u00fas Garc\u00eda (D-IL), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/feb\/11\/us-sanctions-have-catastrophic-impact-amid-covid-say-progressive-democrats\">The Guardian<\/a> last Thursday:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-38z03z\"><em>\u2026the signatories also urge the new administration to take a broader look at sanctions as a foreign policy tool, which they say America had imposed as \u201ca knee jerk reaction\u201d for too long. The letter signals the issue is likely to be at the heart of the foreign policy debate within the party in the Biden era.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Sunday, Omar explained the letter. \u201cThe Biden administration has already taken a first step to do a review and we\u2019re asking them to do a comprehensive review\u2026We know that sanctions often are a tool that is used.
