A student\u2019s transgender status could be \u201cconfidential medical or education information,\u201d and disclosing it, even to their own parents, could violate privacy laws, the agency explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be a challenging situation for all involved when families and students are not on the same page about the student\u2019s gender identity or transition. However, in Washington, the right to be treated consistent with one\u2019s gender identity at school belongs to the student,\u201d OSPI states.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines apply to K-12 public schools, so potentially all the way down to five-year-olds in kindergarten. OSPI <a href=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/files\/assets\/resources\/Schools-In-Transition.pdf#page=37\">says<\/a> that a student\u2019s age and grade level \u201cshould never be used to justify delaying or denying a student\u2019s gender transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn any situation, parent and family support and notification is an <i>option<\/i> to consider, unless it\u2019s a case of a student being harmed or considering harming themselves or others. In those cases, families (unless they are the ones harming the student) and the appropriate authorities would be notified,\u201d OSPI Executive Director of Communications Katy Payne told The Daily Wire in an email.<\/p>\n<p><span>Some teachers who do not agree with hiding children\u2019s gender transitions from their parents are starting to sound the alarm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A teacher in Washington state who spoke with The Daily Wire <\/span><span>broke down<\/span><span> on the phone as she described how helpless she feels in the face of the new gender identity policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I love teaching and I love being with the kids and I\u2019m thinking, I\u2019m one of the last conservative teachers in my building. If I\u2019m gone, there\u2019s no one,\u201d she said, her voice breaking. \u201cThere\u2019s no one there that would tell them any kind of truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Teachers at her school were told by school counselors to use students\u2019 preferred pronouns and names without letting parents know, she said. <\/span><span>Last year, this teacher said she made the mistake of calling up a parent and telling them their child wanted to adopt a new name and gender identity. She asked the parent whether that was okay. The parent responded along the lines of, \u201cdefinitely not, we\u2019re Christians,\u201d and the teacher was pulled into the principal\u2019s office and counselor\u2019s office and reprimanded for divulging that information to the parent.<\/span><span> At the beginning of this school year, that school made a point of spending time going over the OSPI guidelines on parental notification and gender identity with teachers in detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Across her five classes, six students have changed their gender identity, and four more have changed their appearance to resemble the opposite gender but have not announced it, this teacher said. <span>An anecdotal tidbit she shared is that she has overheard students asking each other, \u2018What are you going to be?\u2019 regarding their gender identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>OSPI Superintendent Chris Reykdal has placed an extraordinary emphasis on implementing progressive policies since taking office in 2017. One of Reykdal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.k12.wa.us\/about-ospi\/superintendent-chris-reykdal\/superintendents-vision-priorities\">priorities<\/a> is to make sure teachers are \u201cculturally responsive\u201d and \u201cracially literate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Washington has struggled to retain students in its public education system. The state had one of the largest enrollment drops in the country after the pandemic closed schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/education\/as-washington-state-public-schools-lost-students-during-pandemic-home-schooling-population-has-boomed\/\">losing<\/a> 39,000 students between 2019 and 2020. Since then, the homeschooling population has nearly doubled.<\/p>\n<p>When the pandemic disrupted the school year in April, 2020, Reykdal scrambled to salvage high school graduation rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFs will not be allowed \u2014 there will be no failures this term,\u201d Reykdal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/washington-schools-coronavirus-grading\">said<\/a> in announcing new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.k12.wa.us\/sites\/default\/files\/public\/communications\/OSPI%20Student%20Learning%20and%20Grading%20Guidance_4-21-2020.pdf\">guidance<\/a> on high school grading. \u201cOur policy is, \u2018do no harm,\u2019 \u2026 Students won\u2019t move backward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the relaxed standards were put in place, Washington\u2019s high school seniors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/2020\/dec\/21\/washington-high-school-seniors-set-graduation-rate\/\">graduated<\/a> at record rates in spring, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Washington not the only state with a controversial policy on gender transitions and parental notification. <span>North Carolina now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfirstnc.org\/post\/nc-schools-allow-children-to-change-their-name-and-sex-without-parental-consent\">allows<\/a> students to change their name and sex on state records without parental consent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>T<\/span><span>his has heightened concerns that schools could tacitly encourage children to change their identities behind parents\u2019 backs. <\/span><span>Parents in California, New York, Texas, and Florida have already accused schools of doing just that, suggesting that this issue may be poised to become a sticking point for more parents across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
