Under the university\u2019s conduct code, students who are caught hosting or attending events with more than three households are subject to a fine and suspension from the university.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGatherings that include more than three households are prohibited \u2014 this includes everyone present, including hosts and guests,\u201d the email reads. \u201cFailing to abide by recommended isolation and quarantine recommendations are subject to a fine of $500 and suspension from the university.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Students who violate the conduct code are subject to an expedited hearing process from the Office of Student Life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the same email, students were encouraged to wear masks, socially distance, and limit contact to people within their immediate households. It also encouraged students to \u201cchallenge [their] peers to do better.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The email proceeded to link to a coronavirus \u201cmisconduct\u201d reporting system called \u201cGeneral Student Misconduct Form.\u201d Students are not required to submit their names or contact information when reporting another student. Critics fear that this could lead to bias reporting. The same email encouraged students to call the police if they have first-hand information about plans for large gatherings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vice Provost of Student Life Jeanne Rosenberger rationalized the tip line by expressing fear over the new coronavirus variants from the United Kingdom and South Africa.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGiven the emerging information about new COVID-19 variants and the overall potential risk of not following County health directives, our COVID-19 protocols are more important than ever to protect the health and safety of every member of the Santa Clara and local communities,\u201d Rosenberger said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, the university\u2019s president, Kevin O\u2019Brien, flouted Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/travelers\/travel-during-covid19.html\"><span>recommendations<\/span><\/a> <span>and flew across the country to attend President Joe Biden\u2019s inauguration. According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2021\/01\/19\/santa-clara-university-president-to-deliver-mass-for-joe-biden-before-presidential-inauguration\/\"><span>Mercury News<\/span><\/a><span>, O\u2019Brien presided over a Mass event attended by Joe Biden ahead of the presidential swearing-in ceremony.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Santa Clara University is among many universities that are cracking down on COVID-19 compliance with anonymous tip lines. According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=15545\"><span>Campus Reform<\/span><\/a><span>, other schools that are encouraging students to snitch on each other include Binghamton University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tulane University, and the University of Virginia.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/purdue-suspends-14-for-holding-party-during-coronavirus-pandemic\">The Daily Wire<\/a> reported in September that Purdue University suspended 14 students for holding a party that violated the school\u2019s coronavirus restrictions. Thirteen of the students were athletes.<\/p>\n<p><span>At the University of Illinois, students were arrested for violating the school\u2019s social distancing guidelines. T<\/span><span>he University of Illinois Police Department issued two students three court summons following an investigation into a party, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=15722\">Campus Reform<\/a> reported.
