President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44403\/russian-forces-are-now-authorized-to-use-force-in-ukraine\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced these deployments<\/a>, which all involve elements already positioned in Europe, earlier today. He said that these moves were in direct response to the continued presence of thousands of Russian troops in Belarus that, together with other forces arrayed across Russia&#8217;s borders with Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44354\/putin-has-made-the-decision-to-attack-ukraine-says-biden\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remain poised to attack<\/a> that country. This also comes after the Kremlin ordered troops into disputed Ukrainian territory yesterday, which Biden said constitutes an invasion, as you can read more about in <em>The War Zone<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44403\/russian-forces-are-now-authorized-to-use-force-in-ukraine\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">earlier coverage<\/a> of this crisis.<\/p>\n<p>As part of these deployments, as many as eight Air Force F-35As presently in Germany will disperse to &#8220;several operating locations along NATO&#8217;s eastern flank,&#8221; according to a statement from the Pentagon today. A contingent of 20 Army AH-64s in Germany will head to unspecified locations in the Baltic Sea region. Another 12 Apaches currently in Greece are set to relocate to Poland. Lastly, an Army infantry battalion task force consisting of approximately 800 personnel will deploy from Italy to the Baltic Sea region.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleFragment paragraph\">\n<p>&#8220;These additional forces are being repositioned to reassure our NATO allies, deter any potential aggression, and train with host-nation forces,&#8221; the Pentagon&#8217;s statement said. &#8220;These moves are temporary in nature, and are part of the more than 90,000 U.S. troops already in Europe on rotational and permanent orders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon did not say specifically what units would be providing these forces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleFragment paragraph\">\n<p>With regards to the F-35As, the Air Force does not have any of these jets permanently deployed in Germany. Aviation Week&#8217;s Brian Everstine has reported that these aircraft are from the 34th Fighter Squadron based at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. A contingent of Joint Strike Fighters from Hill arrived <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrc.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/2937558\/hill-fighter-wings-deploy-airmen-f-35s-to-germany\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at Spangdahlem Air Base<\/a> in Germany last week. U.S. intelligence assessments Russia&#8217;s military movements along its western borders, and in neighboring Belarus, have already been based in no small part on a steady stream of information from U.S. and NATO manned and unmanned intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44337\/these-are-the-planes-keeping-watch-on-russian-forces-around-ukraine\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flying persistent missions<\/a> over Ukraine and over adjacent areas.<\/p>\n<p>The Army currently has AH-64s permanently based at Katterbach Army Airfield in Germany as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.12cab.army.mil\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">12th Combat Aviation Brigade<\/a>. Official Army pictures show that Apaches from the 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, an element from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/1stcav\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1st Cavalry Division<\/a>&#8216;s 1st Air Cavalry Brigade at Fort Hood in Texas, are currently forward-deployed at Stefanovikeio Air Base in Greece.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"figure\">\n<div class=\"figure-wrapper\">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"associatedMedia\" class=\"figure-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/message-editor2F1645575429157-ah-64-greece.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption-container\">\n<p>An AH-64E Apache from the 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment at Stefanovikeio Air Base in Greece on February 21, 2022.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <button class=\"gallery-button gallery-previous\"><br \/>\n    <i class=\"icon icon-arrow-previous\"><\/i><br \/>\n  <\/button><br \/>\n  <button class=\"gallery-button gallery-next\"><br \/>\n    <i class=\"icon icon-arrow-next\"><\/i><br \/>\n  <\/button><br \/>\n  <button class=\"gallery-button gallery-close\" title=\"Close\"><br \/>\n    <i class=\"icon icon-close\"><\/i><br \/>\n  <\/button><br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"articleFragment paragraph\">\n<p>The latest versions of the Apache have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/23094\/heres-the-armys-plan-for-making-its-apaches-more-capable-at-sea-and-deadlier-overall\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">substantial surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities<\/a> that the Army could use to help monitor border areas, in addition to being on call for other contingencies. This could be especially useful in the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which share borders with Russia and Belarus to the east. Poland also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/43147\/heres-what-you-should-know-about-the-escalating-crisis-along-belarus-border\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">significant border with Belarus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, the infantry battalion task force is more than likely from the Army&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysoldiers.army.mil\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team<\/a> based in Vicenza, Italy, the service&#8217;s only permanently deployed maneuver combat unit in the country. The 173rd is one of the Army&#8217;s go-to units for responding to contingencies in Europe and elsewhere and has elements on standing alert, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ramstein.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/2484201\/173rd-airborne-37th-as-enhance-interoperability\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ready to go within hours<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"has-ad-column\">\n<div class=\"articleFragment paragraph\">\n<p>The F-35As will join <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44245\/fully-armed-grim-reaper-f-15-eagles-deploy-to-poland-in-response-to-russian-military-build-up\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force F-15s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44262\/missile-laden-f-16s-head-to-romania-amid-fears-of-imminent-war-in-ukraine\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">F-16s deployed<\/a> to the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea regions as part of this broader effort to reinforce areas of NATO&#8217;s periphery near Russia. Other NATO member states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44151\/these-photos-of-armed-nato-f-16s-high-over-the-baltics-are-absolutely-incredible\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have forward-deployed various types<\/a> of fighters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Army attack helicopters and troops from Italy will <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/3000-us-troops-82nd-airborne-head-poland-amid\/story?id=82834091\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">join thousands of other personnel<\/a> that the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44125\/u-s-army-armored-vehicles-paratroopers-will-fan-out-in-europe-to-deter-putin\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has deployed across Europe<\/a> in recent weeks. The Germany-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2cr.army.mil\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2nd Cavalry Regiment<\/a>, which is primarily equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/13610\/u-s-armys-upgunned-stryker-armored-vehicles-will-soon-be-on-the-front-lines\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stryker wheeled armored vehicles<\/a>, and the U.S.-based <a href=\"https:\/\/home.army.mil\/bragg\/index.php\/units-tenants\/82nd-airborne-division\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">82nd Airborne Division<\/a>, one of <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/army-82nd-airborne-division-immediate-response\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">America&#8217;s premier contingency response forces<\/a>, have supplied the bulk of these forces. The 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, which is equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/39374\/american-avenger-air-defense-systems-reportedly-spotted-on-a-highway-linking-iraq-and-syria\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Avenger short-range air defense systems<\/a> and is also based in Germany, has sent contingents to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44262\/missile-laden-f-16s-head-to-romania-amid-fears-of-imminent-war-in-ukraine\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">help shield temporary base camps<\/a> in Poland and Romania, too. Army aviation elements equipped with various types of Black Hawk helicopters have been observed operating those countries recently, as you can read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44322\/heres-why-a-u-s-army-black-hawk-helicopter-flew-to-the-polish-ukrainian-border-last-night\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"articleFragment paragraph\">\n<p>U.S. special operations forces may now be positioned forward at locations in Europe to help support the response to any future contingencies. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/7061302\/maj-gen-tabor-visits-poland\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">official pictures indicated<\/a> that elements of the U.K.-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/37738\/americas-elite-flying-unit-that-made-the-recent-long-range-hostage-rescue-in-africa-possible\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">352nd Special Operations Wing<\/a> were deployed to Powidz Air Base in Poland, at least as of February 20. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/28048\/mc-130j-special-ops-transports-are-finally-getting-this-terrain-following-radar-they-badly-need\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MC-130J Commando II<\/a> special operations tanker-transports and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/7377\/10-cv-22-ospreys-flying-low-in-formation-sounds-like-a-pit-of-hissing-snakes\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CV-22B Osprey<\/a> tilt-rotors, possibly from the 352nd and operating from Powidz, may have been involved in the temporary relocation of personnel assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine to a site in neighboring Poland yesterday, something you can find more details about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44394\/u-s-says-diplomats-out-of-ukraine-after-u-s-special-ops-aircraft-tracked-near-polish-border\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A number of U.S. Navy warships, including the aircraft carrier USS <em>Harry S. Truman<\/em> and its associated strike group and a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/02\/10\/4-east-coast-destroyers-deploy-to-europe-joining-u-s-naval-build-up\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quartet of <em>Arleigh Burke<\/em> class<\/a> destroyers are in European waters where they could contribute the broader effort to bolster NATO&#8217;s maritime force posture, as well as take part in various exercises. <em>Truman<\/em> was notably placed under the alliance&#8217;s control for an exercise last month, the first time this had been done since the end of the Cold War. That carrier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44184\/three-nato-carrier-groups-are-exercising-together-in-the-mediterranean\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also trained with<\/a> the French and Italian carriers FRS <em>Charles de Gaulle <\/em>and ITS <em>Cavour<\/em> earlier this month<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"has-ad-column\">\n<div class=\"articleFragment paragraph\">\n<p>&#8220;Let me be clear: These are totally defensive moves on our part,&#8221; President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/02\/22\/remarks-by-president-biden-announcing-response-to-russian-actions-in-ukraine\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said earlier today<\/a> about these deployments. &#8220;We have no intention of fighting Russia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. government has no intention to directly intervene militarily in the crisis surrounding Ukraine, American officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44125\/u-s-army-armored-vehicles-paratroopers-will-fan-out-in-europe-to-deter-putin\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have acknowledged the possibility<\/a> that a large-scale conflict there could spill over onto NATO territory in Europe.
