Laid-off employees will receive severance packages.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes just weeks after Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarpowerworldonline.com\/2022\/02\/biden-says-four-more-years-of-imported-solar-panel-tariffs-but-bifacial-get-free-pass\/\">decided<\/a> to exempt foreign-made bifacial solar panels \u2014 the overwhelming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanenergyalliance.org\/2022\/02\/biden-helps-china-again-exempting-bifacial-solar-panels-from-tariffs\/\">majority<\/a> of which come from China \u2014 from Section 201 tariffs on solar imports to the United States that were first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/updates\/2018-01\/trump-imposes-tariffs-imported-solar-panels\">imposed<\/a> by former President Trump in January 2018 at a 30 percent rate.<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) had warned that Biden\u2019s gutting U.S. tariffs on China-made bifacial solar panels would have a devastating impact on America\u2019s solar manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChina sympathizers may believe that gutting the 201 solar tariffs would not affect the U.S. solar manufacturing industry as long as Congress supports domestic producers. This is flat-out wrong,\u201d CPA Chairman Zach Mottl said in a statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Without trade remedies to level the playing field for U.S. solar manufacturers<\/strong> that are competing against heavily subsidized Chinese companies, <strong>it won\u2019t matter if Congress passes a domestic tax credit<\/strong> for American producers. [Emphasis added]\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shortly after Trump imposed the U.S. tariffs on solar imports, LG Electronics <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.alabama.gov\/newsroom\/2018\/06\/governor-ivey-announces-lg-electronics-to-open-alabama-solar-panel-plant-creating-160-jobs\/\">announced<\/a> that they would expand their Huntsville campus to include manufacturing solar panels \u2014 a boon for the city\u2019s local economy as every one factory job supports an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KeepitMadeinUSA\/status\/1088157044136427520\">additional 7.4 jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In November, as Breitbart News reported, Biden\u2019s Commerce Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/11\/joe-biden-sides-with-chinese-solar-manufacturers-evading-u-s-tariffs\/\">sided with Chinese<\/a> solar manufacturers who produce their products in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam by denying a request from American solar manufacturers to investigate U.S. tariff evasion.<\/p>\n<p>Biden had\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rosen.senate.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-09\/Senate%20Letter%20to%20Commerce%20on%20Solar%20Tariff%20Petition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been lobbied<\/a>\u00a0by 12 Senate Democrats who sent a letter asking the administration not to impose any tariffs on the products made in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam by the Chinese solar manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>From 2001 to 2018, U.S. free trade with China has cost Alabama at least\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/growing-china-trade-deficits-costs-us-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">50,700 jobs<\/a>\u00a0or about 2.5 percent of the state\u2019s employment.
