But British Prime Minister Boris Johnson late last month tweeted that it \u201cmay also be associated with a higher degree of mortality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have now learned that, in addition to spreading more quickly, the new variant of the virus may also be associated with a higher degree of mortality,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cIt is therefore more important than ever that we all follow the rules and stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We have now learned that, in addition to spreading more quickly, the new variant of the virus may also be associated with a higher degree of mortality.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore more important than ever that we all follow the rules and stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BorisJohnson\/status\/1352707576287387651?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 22, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The new study, which examined a large number of patients, appears to confirm that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is evidence from analysis of multiple different datasets that infection with VOC B1.1.7 is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and death compared to infection with\u201d other forms of the virus, the authors of the study said.<\/p>\n<p>The more transmissible strain has spread to more than 80 countries, including the U.S., according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>The first case of the strain found in the U.S. was detected Tuesday in a Colorado resident who had not travelled abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we discovered Colorado\u2019s first case of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, the same variant discovered in the UK,\u201d Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis wrote last month on Twitter. \u201cThe health and safety of Coloradans is our top priority and we will monitor this case, as well as all COVID-19 indicators, very closely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The strain was found in a man in his 20s who had no travel history, state health officials <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/public-health-united-kingdom-jared-polis-coronavirus-pandemic-denver-755cd6f5e9189b1890f34f625d6a37f8\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/public-health-united-kingdom-jared-polis-coronavirus-pandemic-denver-755cd6f5e9189b1890f34f625d6a37f8\">told<\/a> The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot we don\u2019t know about this new COVID-19 variant, but scientists in the United Kingdom are warning the world that it is significantly more contagious,\u201d Polis said. \u201cThe health and safety of Coloradans is our top priority and we will closely monitor this case, as well as all COVID-19 indicators, very closely. We are working to prevent spread and contain the virus at all levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also last month, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that there are \u201cmore ominous\u201d strains of COVID-19 that are emerging in South Africa and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, an immunologist and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who served on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said U.S. researchers are \u201cvery carefully\u201d examining the two new mutant strains, as well as another first detected in the United Kingdom that is reportedly far more contagious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople need to realize there\u2019s more than one mutant strain,\u201d Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/meet-the-press\/fauci-weeks-not-months-new-vaccines-are-submitted-approval-n1254543\">said<\/a> on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d&nbsp;\u201cThere\u2019s one from the UK that\u2019s essentially dominated. There\u2019s another more ominous one that\u2019s in South Africa and Brazil,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Brits have made it very clear that [the strain detected there is] more contagious,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey say that it isn\u2019t more virulent.
