A lot of people like myself think it is more likely. I think attitudes have changed a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a huge amount of concern about coming out publicly, but behind closed doors most people think it\u2019s a lab leak. And they are coming round to the fact that even if they don\u2019t agree with that, they must accept it\u2019s likely, and they must make sure the policies are in place to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colonel de Bretton-Gordon, a leading expert in Britain on chemical and biological counter-terrorism, added that the \u201czoonotic transfer theory just didn\u2019t make sense,\u201d referring to the idea that the virus developed within an animal before jumping to humans.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>He added: \u201cMy view, that I\u2019ve put to the Government already, is that we cannot afford emotionally, physically or financially, to go through another pandemic. Some 27 scientists \u201cstrongly condemned conspiracy theories\u201d such as the hypothesis that the Chinese virus leaked from the Wuhan lab.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was organised by British zoologist Dr Peter Daszak, who later admitted to having a conflict of interest as he serves as the president of the US-based EcoHealth Alliance. The NGO funded research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology with money supplied from the Dr Anthony Fauci-run National Institutes of Health (NIH).<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a class=\"x_x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/09\/06\/new-details-emerge-about-coronavirus-research-at-chinese-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the <em>Intercept<\/em> found that the American government supplied EcoHealth Alliance with $3.1 million in funding, including $599,000 which went to the Wuhan Institute of Virology to study, in part, the ability to alter bat coronaviruses in order to make them more infectious to humans, directly contradicting sworn testimony from Dr Fauci, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2021\/09\/07\/report-top-scientist-claims-anthony-fauci-untruthful-about-chinese-lab-research\/\">claimed<\/a> that the U.S. did not fund gain of function research in Wuhan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Dr Daszak later served on the World Health Organization\u2019s team of investigators who inspected the Wuhan lab and declared that there was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2021\/03\/29\/whos-daszak-extremely-unlikely-covid-originated-in-accidental-lab-leak-no-evidence\/\">no evidence<\/a>\u201d of a leak, despite admitting that his team essentially had to take the word of researchers at the lab, as his team was not provided with hard evidence\u00a0that the virus did not exist in the lab prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>A report from Republicans in the United States House of Representatives \u2014 which found that the \u201cpreponderance of evidence\u201d suggested a lab leak \u2014 claimed that\u00a0Daszak had personally met the Wuhan Institute of Virology\u2019s \u2018Batwoman\u2019 researcher Shi Zhengli in 2004 and had used American government grants to conduct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/08\/03\/house-republican-report-preponderance-of-evidence-shows-covid-19-leaked-from-wuhan-lab\/\">gain of function research<\/a> on bat coronaviruses at the lab.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>In September of last year, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2021\/09\/10\/revealed-scientists-dismissed-wuhan-lab-theory-linked-chinese\/\">investigation<\/a> by <em>The Telegraph<\/em> claimed that 26 out of the 27 scientists who signed the letter had conflicts of interest as they were either tied to the\u00a0Chinese lab or other researchers and funders tied to Wuhan. At the time of <em>The Lancet<\/em> letter\u2019s publication, none of the signatories who denounced \u201cconspiracy theories\u201d declared a conflict of interest.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">China Lied, People Died: Five Eyes Report Details CCP Coronavirus Cover-up <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sHLCxA7ZRt\">https:\/\/t.co\/sHLCxA7ZRt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1256565122014871553?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Though the comments from\u00a0Colonel De Bretton-Gordon represent one of the first indications that the British government now allegedly subscribes to the theory, prominent figures in the UK, such as former MI6 director Sir Richard Dearlove have long promoted the idea.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>As early as June of 2020, the\u00a0former leader of Britain\u2019s foreign secret intelligence service said that he believed \u2014 on the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2020\/06\/03\/exclusive-coronavirus-began-accident-disease-escaped-chinese\/\">studies of the virus<\/a> \u2014 that it had been \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2020\/06\/04\/former-uk-spy-chief-claims-coronavirus-escaped-chinese-lab\/\">engineered<\/a>\u201d and therefore was likely to have originated in the Wuhan lab.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Richard argued at the time that therefore the government should\u00a0\u201crethink how it treats its relationship with\u00a0China and how the international community behaves towards the Chinese leadership\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged the risks posed by lab leaks, telling the House of Commons that the government\u2019s biosecurity strategy is being updated to prepare for the possibility of future \u201cnatural zoonosis and laboratory leaks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Colonel De Bretton-Gordon, who formerly served as the commander of Britain\u2019s\u00a0Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Regiment, said that biosurveillance systems and treaties on biological weapons are in need of updating to prevent future pandemics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019d had detectors at stations and airports in Wuhan, you could have prevented about four million journeys in that first week. With that kind of system, you could stop a lab leak turning into an epidemic, turning into a pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy big concern is that next time it might not be an accident, because it\u2019s easy to do.
