Even after coming down slightly on the day by the end of trading levelling out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/02\/22\/business\/stock-market-economy-news\">around<\/a> 10 per cent higher, the market price is still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barchart.com\/futures\/quotes\/TG*1\">14 per cent higher<\/a> than just five days ago.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Despite Russian gas only accounting for 3 per cent of Britain\u2019s gas consumption, the UK, for its part, saw its own benchmark jump by 10 per cent on Tuesday, the <em>i<\/em> newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/consumer\/uk-gas-prices-rise-russia-eu-sanctions-nord-stream-2-pipeline-1476665\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the flow of gas has not changed from Russia into Europe as of yet, the futures traders were likely operating under the assumption that Russian leader Vladimir Putin would attempt to punish Europe after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/02\/22\/german-chancellor-sholz-blocks-approval-for-russias-nord-stream-2-pipeline\/\">decision<\/a> by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to prevent the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline from finding regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p>Playing into such concerns, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MedvedevRussiaE\/status\/1496112456858574849\">said<\/a> in response to the pipeline cancellation on Tuesday: \u201cWelcome to the brave new world where Europeans are very soon going to pay \u20ac2,000 for 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Currently, Germany receives around half of its natural gas from Russia.\u00a0Chancellor Scholz has vowed to search for alternative sources of energy to become less reliant on Russia, yet, it remains to be seen if his coalition government \u2014 which is comprised partially of an alliance with the Green Party \u2014 will reverse the government\u2019s decision to shut down its nuclear energy sector, or indeed lift the prohibition on fracking in Germany.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">German Chancellor Sholz Blocks Approval for Russia\u2019s Nord Stream 2 Pipeline over Putin\u2019s Moves in Ukraine<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T8azzZThPQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/T8azzZThPQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1496183006620381184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 22, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On Wednesday, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck said that the government will look to at least temporarily suspend the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) surcharge tax on energy that is directed towards supposedly green energy sources such as wind and solar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can hardly intervene in the world market price, for gas or oil. However, we will abolish the EEG surcharge,\u201d the Green politician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.n-tv.de\/politik\/Habeck-will-Preisanstieg-bei-Gas-ausgleichen-article23147170.html\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Habeck went on to say that current stockpiles of gas in Germany will be able to sustain the country during the current crisis and said that ultimately Germany will be able to completely shift away from Russian gas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Should Germany actually follow through and opt to buy liquified natural gas from the world market instead of directly from Russia, prices would likely rise dramatically around the globe, as demand rises on finite supply.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Germany \u2018Dramatically Behind\u2019 its Emissions Target After Abandoning \u2018Dangerous\u2019 Nuclear Energy<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9C9al17fGT\">https:\/\/t.co\/9C9al17fGT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1481974384780664841?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 14, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>As has been the case with the UK, the dispute over Ukraine is likely to influence prices outside of Europe, such as in the United States of America as global demand jumps. Admitting to this reality, during a White House speech on Tuesday evening President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/22\/joe-biden-sanctions-russia-warning-america-of-the-economic-costs-of-defending-freedom-in-ukraine\/\">said<\/a>: \u201cDefending freedom will have costs, for us as well, and here at home\u2026 We need to be honest about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to limit the pain the American people are feeling at the gas pump,\u201d Biden continued.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine is one of many factors impacting fluctuations in gas prices \u2014 among them Coronavirus disruptions, strong demand in the east, rising demand in Europe as lockdowns end, and infrastructure and storage failures impacting reserve holdings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike Germany, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has so far refused to entertain tax cuts on energy, with estimates projecting that the average some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/debate\/article-10366275\/ROSS-CLARK-DOES-green-tax-energy-bill-actually-pay-for.html\">25 per cent<\/a> of energy bills are directed towards green energy projects. The government has also refused to cut the Value Added Tax (VAT) on energy, despite Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrHarryCole\/status\/1478379243675529222\">previously arguing<\/a> that such an idea would be a benefit of leaving the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>A senior investment and markets analyst at British financial service firm Hargreaves Lansdown, Susannah Streeter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10538729\/Russia-Ukraine-crisis-hit-pockets-struggling-British-families.html\">told<\/a> the Daily Mail: \u201cAlready oil and gas prices are marching upwards as Russia put boots on the ground in Eastern Ukraine, and as fears of an escalation of the situation mount, it\u2019s led to expectations of even higher prices to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went on to warn that should a full-scale conflict break out, there could be further increases in food inflation as grain shipments from Ukraine, Russia, Romania, and Kazakhstan in the Black Sea could be disrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extra pounds on bills are piling up for hard-hit families, with the increase in fuel, energy and grocery bills set to hit lower-income households harder as a higher proportion of their outgoings will be spent on travel costs.
