The protest was overwhelmingly peaceful throughout its existence \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/02\/06\/childless-ottawa-mayor-disturbing-to-see-kids-in-bouncy-castles-having-fun-at-protest\/\">consisting<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/18\/freedom-convoy-partied-into-the-night-on-eve-of-mass-police-action\/\">dancing<\/a>, children\u2019s activities, barbecues, and hot tub meetings. The only significant instances of violence occurred after Trudeau invoked the Act as police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2022\/02\/21\/watchdog-says-woman-seriously-injured-horse-despite-ottawa-police-denial\/\">trampled<\/a> protesters with horses and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10537343\/They-broke-body-little-bit-not-spirit-Canada-trucker-tells-beaten-police.html\">beat<\/a> them in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>The Freedom Convoy is a series of protests against the violations of the freedoms of assembly, religion, and medical freedom to contain the Chinese coronavirus pandemic. Protesters are calling for an end to vaccine and mask mandates, business lockdowns, and limitations on the rights of children to go to school. Trudeau has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/31\/justin-trudeau-on-dodging-tinfoil-hat-truckers-i-talk-to-protesters-i-agree-with-like-blm\/\">called<\/a> the protesters \u201cfringe\u201d \u201ctinfoil hat\u201d wearers akin to Nazis and supporters of the defunct American Confederacy. (Adrian Wyld \/The Canadian Press via AP)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Major Canadian outlets published commentary on Monday revealing increasing impatience with Trudeau\u2019s handling of the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPressed hard for an Emergencies Act justification with the protests gone, border blockades down and convoy leaders in custody, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reached deep into his leadership vacuum for rationalizations,\u201d CTV News\u2019 Don Martin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/mobile\/politics\/don-martin-an-emergency-about-nothing-as-tow-trucks-become-the-excuse-to-act-1.5790644\">quipped<\/a>. \u201cThe emergency demanding the unprecedented use of the Act was \u2026 hesitant tow truck drivers, the prime minister declared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the invocation of the Act, local tow truck drivers in Ottawa had refused police requests to tow 18-wheelers out of the downtown area. The trucks had parked there, blocking the roads, as a form of peaceful protest.<\/p>\n<p>Martin described the vote to approve the Emergencies Act as \u201cobsolete\u201d and \u201can Emergencies Act in search of an emergency,\u201d noting it was \u201cintroduced two weeks too late and approved on Monday night by a vote of 185 to 151, two days after the inspiration for the Act had left the city.\u201d Trudeau, he concluded, had created \u201can emergency about nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin predicted Trudeau would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/14\/justin-trudeau-tanks-in-the-polls-with-both-supporters-and-opponents-of-freedom-convoy\/\">continue<\/a> to tank in the polls following the use of the Act.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFor all these flaws and faults framed by his moistly delivered repetitive geyser of rhetorical babble, his reputation has taken a hard hit,\u201d Martin wrote. \u201cAs the convoys retreated, they left behind smoldering wrecks in Canada\u2019s political leadership. Removing them may be the most legitimate emergency use of tow trucks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The editorial boards of the\u00a0<em>Globe and Mail<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Toronto Star,\u00a0<\/em>newspapers that had shown no sympathy for the Freedom Convoy, expressed similar frustrations on Monday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA week ago, when the Trudeau government activated the never-before-used law, there were compelling arguments for and against its use,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Globe and Mail<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article-parliament-should-end-the-state-of-emergency-or-at-least-severely\/\">posited<\/a>. \u201cBut for MPs and senators, the question of what was justified, seven long days ago, is now moot. It was illegal and it had to be ended. But did it constitute a once-in-a-generation national emergency?\u201d the editors asked. \u201cEven that is now moot, the protestors and their trucks having been removed on the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\">\u201cAs such, the question before Parliament is not: \u2018Was Canada facing an unprecedented national emergency, a week ago?\u2019 It is rather: \u2018Is Canada facing an unprecedented national emergency, today?&#8217;\u201d the editorial argued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\">Similarly, the editors of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2022\/02\/21\/ottawa-should-make-the-case-for-extra-powers-to-deal-with-occupations-and-blockades.html\"><em>Toronto Star<\/em><\/a>\u00a0questioned on Monday \u201cwhether the powers of the federal Emergencies Act were needed to clear the streets of Ottawa,\u201d much less after that clearing occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Star<\/em> praised the police brutality this weekend as \u201can impressive display of both force and restraint.\u201d Nonetheless, the editors wrote, \u201cit\u2019s possible to oppose the goals and conduct of the convoy protesters strongly, and still worry that reaching for the most extreme federal emergency power sets a worrisome precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Edmonton Journal<\/em>, a newspaper that had published an opinion <a href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/opinion\/columnists\/opinion-are-conservatives-becoming-canadas-trump-republicans\">piece<\/a> comparing the peaceful Ottawa protests with the January 6, 2021, riot in Washington, DC, also complained this week that there was no good reason to use the Emergencies Act for the first time in history.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19931226\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19931226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/GettyImages-1238572385-e1645546319396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snow falls around a demonstrator waving a flag during a protest by truck drivers over pandemic health rules and the Trudeau government, outside the parliament of Canada in Ottawa on February 17, 2022. (Photo by ED JONES\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThat the federal government has invoked the Emergencies Act to remove maybe 200 remaining protestors \u2014 since the other border protests had already been removed before the unprecedented invocation of this law \u2014 is proof that it was not needed,\u201d columnist Licia Corbella <a href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/opinion\/columnists\/corbella-a-tale-of-two-protests-one-peaceful-and-one-violent-but-neither-needing-emergencies-act\/wcm\/17be5f13-e595-4836-9618-fc0cec41c27c\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The resistance to Trudeau\u2019s unprecedented measure is notable because many of these publications were openly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/09\/left-blames-trump-americans-for-canadas-freedom-convoy\/\">hostile<\/a> to the protest movement, objecting that Ottawa residents had been inconvenienced and buying into unsubstantiated conspiracy theories that former American President Donald Trump was somehow behind the anti-mandate movement.<\/p>\n<p>Polls prior to the invocation of the Emergencies Act found growing discontent with Trudeau on his side of the political aisle, particularly among those on the left who wanted him to act more directly to end the protests.
