Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Colombia-Abortion-640x335-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">Abortion giant Planned Parenthood has called for celebration after Colombia\u2019s high court legalized abortion Monday, the latest Latin American country to decriminalize the practice.<\/p>\n<p>On its Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ProfamiliaColombia1965\/\">page<\/a>, Profamilia Colombia \u2014 the name of Planned Parenthood in the country \u2014 urged its followers to celebrate the \u201chistoric\u201d step in guaranteeing sexual and reproductive rights of \u201cwomen and gestating persons.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Planned Parenthood, which boasts 46 clinics in 36 Colombian cities, had been vigorously campaigning for the legalization of abortion under the slogan \u201cAborto s\u00ed!\u201d calling the measure a sign of progress.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, judges on Colombia\u2019s constitutional court ruled in a 5-4 vote to decriminalize abortion until 24 weeks of gestation, adding Colombia to the Latin American countries that have recently liberalized abortion access, including Mexico, Argentina, and Ecuador.<\/p>\n<p>After 24 weeks, women may continue to abort their children only in cases of rape or incest, life-threatening fetal deformities, or a danger to the mother\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe practice of abortion will only be punishable when it is conducted after the twenty-fourth week of gestation and, in all cases, this time limit will not apply to the three conditions laid out in Ruling C-355 of 2006,\u201d the court <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CConstitucional\/status\/1495883181354106885\/photo\/1\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The decision follows a lawsuit brought by abortion rights groups, known collectively as the Green Wave, to have abortion removed from the penal code.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile today we are celebrating this historic decision, the Green Wave is strong and growing, and the fight for reproductive rights and justice will not end until every person can access high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare when and where they need it,\u201d Eugenia Lopez Uribe, the International Planned Parenthood Foundation\u2019s regional director for the Americas and the Caribbean region,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2022\/feb\/22\/colombia-legalises-abortion-in-move-celebrated-as-historic-victory-by-campaigners\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Episcopal Conference of Colombia issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cec.org.co\/sistema-informativo\/destacados\/el-aborto-directo-es-un-acto-inmoral-y-una-pr%C3%A1ctica-violenta\">statement<\/a> Tuesday, expressing its \u201cperplexity and profound sorrow\u201d over the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo maintain that the Constitutionally protected right to life and to receive the protection of the State, does not protect a person from the moment of his conception, is an affront to human dignity,\u201d the bishops said. \u201cLikewise, protecting the supposed right to suppress an innocent human life jeopardizes the very foundation of our social order and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirect abortion is an immoral act and a violent practice contrary to life,\u201d they asserted.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tdwilliamsrome?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @tdwilliamsrome<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abortion giant Planned Parenthood has called for celebration after Colombia\u2019s high court legalized abortion Monday, the latest Latin American country to decriminalize the practice.
