Russian President Vladimir Putin unilaterally recognized the independence of separatist regions in Ukraine\u2019s Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts on Monday, ordering Russian troops into the areas on a \u201cpeacekeeping\u201d mission.<\/p>\n<p>The White House strengthened its language on the events Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia\u2019s latest invasion into Ukraine,\u201d principal Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer said, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-business-europe-russia-vladimir-putin-46cef648807d0e3c2bac9793ad9022a6\">Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cAn invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration responded to the Russian invasion of Donetsk and Luhansk with sanctions on the Donetsk and Luhansk People\u2019s Republics as recognized by the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden will soon issue an Executive Order that will prohibit new investment, trade, and financing by U.S. persons to, from, or in the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine,\u201d White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/02\/21\/statement-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-on-russian-announcement-on-eastern-ukraine\/\">statement<\/a> Monday. \u201cThis E.O. will also provide authority to impose sanctions on any person determined to operate in those areas of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This is a breaking story.
