The timeout clearly irked Howard, who attempted to walk by Gard in the handshake line. Gard appeared to grab Howard as walked by, kicking off the fireworks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, I addressed it with the head coach that I will remember that, because of that timeout,\u201d Howard said postgame. \u201cAnd for someone to touch me, I think that was very uncalled for, for him to touch me, as we were verbalizing and communicating with one another. So, that\u2019s what ended up happening. That\u2019s what escalated it.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Juwan Howard says Greg Gard touching him &#8220;unnecessarily&#8221; in the post-game handshake line escalated the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought it was time to protect myself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>FWIW Gard is 5-11. Howard is 6-9. <\/p>\n<p>He also swung at Joe Krabbenhoft a few moments later.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Badgers?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Badgers<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RlgmosIOLi\">pic.twitter.com\/RlgmosIOLi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Evan Flood (@Evan_Flood) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Evan_Flood\/status\/1495506046726688770?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The Big 10 conference put out a statement following the game, saying they would take \u201cswift and appropriate disciplinary action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Big Ten Conference is aware of a physical altercation involving Michigan Head Coach Juwan Howard at the conclusion of the Michigan Wolverines and Wisconsin Badgers men\u2019s basketball game,\u201d the Big 10 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/news\/2022\/2\/20\/mens-basketball-big-ten-conference-statement.aspx\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe conference is in contact with both member institutions and is currently assessing the incident. The conference will provide more information and will take swift and appropriate disciplinary action when it completes its review.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gard told CBS that he called the timeout so that his team would not incur a halfcourt violation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cApparently he didn\u2019t like that I called the timeout to reset the 10-second call,\u201d Gard told CBS. \u201cBecause we only had four seconds to get the ball over half court,\u201d Gard told CBS. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to put my backups \u2014 I had all my bench guys in the game \u2014 I didn\u2019t want to put them in that position of scrambling with only four seconds. So, I took a timeout and got us a new 10 seconds and it helped them get organized and get the ball in. And he did not like that when he came through the handshake line. I\u2019ll leave it at that and the tape will show the rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Michigan currently sits at 8-7 in Big Ten play, fighting for an NCAA tournament berth.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI am aware of and watched the end of our men\u2019s basketball game,\u201d Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UMichAthletics\/status\/1495523215220908032?s=20&#038;t=kG1jxpRFZP5gh3Tv8iGR4g\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a statement. \u201cThere is no excuse for any of our staff or student-athletes to get into a physical altercation with others regardless of instigating factors. I reached out and apologized to Chris McIntosh and President Coleman has reached out to UW Chancellor Blank to apologize for the totally unacceptable behavior.
