Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GettyImages-800065550-640x335-1.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">The governments of China and Russia are developing an agreement that would see Beijing purchase 100 million metric tons of coal from Moscow, the Kremlin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/economy\/1405789\">announced<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A]n intergovernmental agreement with the People\u2019s Republic of China is being developed, and the figure is 100 mln tonnes [of coal],\u201d Sergey Mochalnikov \u2014 the Head of Department of Foreign Economic Cooperation and Fuel Markets Development at the Russian Energy Ministry \u2014 told reporters on February 18.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn the coming years, consumers should receive as much coal as they need,\u201d Mochalnikov said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussian coal exports have very good prospects due to reduced supply on the world market,\u201d Mochalnikov noted on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow has considered the Asia-Pacific market a \u201cpriority export destination\u201d for Russian-produced coal for the past five to six years due to its increased demand for the fuel, Mochalnikov revealed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have good prospects until 2030, and Russia should take its share in this growing market,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]he share of Russian coal in the Asia-Pacific market in 2021 was 12 percent,\u201d TASS reported on February 18.<\/p>\n<p>This figure has increased by eight percentage points since 2010, according to the Russian state-owned news agency.<\/p>\n<p>China is suffering from a massive coal shortage that has pressed Beijing to ramp up imports of the fuel from foreign countries, especially Russia, over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina imported about 3.7 million tons of thermal coal from Russia in September [2021],\u201d the Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/28\/china-is-ramping-up-coal-imports-from-russia-but-not-australia.html\">reported<\/a> in October 2021. \u201cThat\u2019s up 28% from August [2021] and more than 230% higher than a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The financial news outlet cited customs data accessed through the Chinese financial data firm Wind Information as its source for China\u2019s coal import figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina\u2019s imports of thermal coal from Russia have either doubled or tripled from 2020 levels every month since May [2021],\u201d CNBC further observed. \u201cThe monthly figures this year also remain well above pre-pandemic levels in 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s coal shortage is directly tied to the nation\u2019s recent power outages, which have affected several provinces since May 2021. The state electric grid of China is powered largely through coal. A tight supply of the carbon-based fuel within China caused prices of the commodity to spike to record highs last year. The twin developments restricted the amount of coal available to Chinese state power plant operators, forcing both approved and unplanned electricity blackouts nationwide over a period of several months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter closing most of their coal mines, China\u2019s northeastern provinces have relied on coal from neighboring provinces or imports from countries such as Russia and Mongolia.
