Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos later said he erred in addressing employee concerns, but the special remained on the streaming service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be disingenuous to shine a light on Netflix\u2019s inclusive programming without also being clear on the harm Netflix did to the LGBTQ community this past fall by doubling down on giving anti-LGBTQ content the reach and legitimacy of their platform and brand,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix declined comment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>After last year\u2019s pandemic reduced the TV industry\u2019s output, the GLAAD report expressed satisfaction that the rebound didn\u2019t leave behind LGBTQ depictions. The growth in streaming services, including Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+ and Peacock, opened the door for more inclusive fare.<\/p>\n<p>The following are among the report\u2019s findings, by platform:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>STREAMING<\/p>\n<p>There were 358 regularly seen and recurring LGBTQ characters in series offered by the eight streaming services included in the study \u2014 an increase of 217 from last year\u2019s total found on three streaming services. (Last year, only Amazon, Hulu and Netflix were tracked.)<\/p>\n<p>Helping Netflix retain its lead in LGBTQ depictions are foreign-language dramas with queer stories, the report said, including \u201cYoung Royals\u201d from Sweden, \u201cRebelde\u201d from Mexico and \u201cElite\u201d from Spain. They join the inclusive Netflix comedies \u201cNever Have I Ever,\u201d \u201cQ-Force\u201d and \u201cSex Education.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19930730\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/sex-education-netflix-review-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19930730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/sex-education-netflix-review-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Netflix<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>HBO Max, which launched in spring 2020, landed in second place in its first GLAAD tally. The service \u201cquickly built a reputation for standout LGBTQ-inclusive comedy series,\u201d the report said, with the majority of its 71 LGBTQ characters found on comedies, including the Emmy-winning \u201cHacks,\u201d \u201cThe Sex Lives of College Girls\u201d and \u201cSort Of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BROADCAST NETWORKS<\/p>\n<p>Of the 775 regularly appearing series characters on networks in prime time, 92 (11.9%) were LGBTQ. The previous record high, in the 2019-20 report, was 10.2%. Combining recurring and regular roles, LGBTQ characters totaled 141, a \u201csignificant increase\u201d over last year\u2019s tally of 101, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>In a first-time finding, lesbians represent the majority of LGBTQ characters on broadcast, with new characters introduced in series including \u201cNCIS: Hawai\u2019i\u201d and \u201cLaw &amp; Order: Organized Crime.\u201d The study called it a welcome and \u201cnoteworthy change\u201d from TV\u2019s criticized portrayal of queer women as tragic figures.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19930770\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NUP_195580_00091-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19930770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NUP_195580_00091-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"970\" height=\"546\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>NBC<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Although networks field shows with multiple LGBTQ characters, including \u201cStation 19\u201d and \u201cBatwoman,\u201d there has yet to be a series with a majority LGBTQ cast, the study said. In contrast, cable and streaming have offered several, including \u201cPose,\u201d \u201cQueer as Folk\u201d and \u201cTales of the City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among series regulars, characters of color reached a record 50%, up 4 percentage points from the previous season, while the share of female series regulars hit a new high of 47%. But network depictions of characters with disabilities dropped to 2.8%, just 22 characters, from a high of 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p>CABLE CHANNELS<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, GLAAD said that it asked all TV platforms to commit to people of color making up at least half of LGBTQ characters, and broadcast and cable met the challenge. \u201cUnfortunately, this year cable moved backward,\u201d the report said, dropping from 52% to 45%.<\/p>\n<p>A sharp jump in the number of recurring LGBTQ characters on cable series, along with an uptick among regular characters, brought the combined total to 138 on prime-time scripted cable originals.
