We see no condemnations or investigations of [these] crimes against humanity,\u201d he said. He then railed, \u201cWe are talking about the deaths of people during the 2014 coup d\u2019etat, when the Trade Union House in Odessa was set ablaze and during the punitive operations in Donbass.\u201d Brussels is the location of NATO headquarters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf this is not genocide, then what is?\u201d Volodin asked, deploying rhetoric the international community finds unnerving because it suspects Russia will use charges of \u201cgenocide\u201d as a pretext for invading Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ukraine does have some experience with actual genocide \u2013 that is, being on the receiving end of it from Russia under dictator Joseph Stalin. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Holodomor\">Holodomor<\/a> was a man-made famine that killed some four million Ukrainians between 1931 and 1934. Some of Stalin\u2019s victims were reduced to cannibalism. The starvation campaign was accompanied by an orchestrated effort to eradicate the culture and political leadership of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_6122914\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Joseph-Stalin-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6122914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Joseph-Stalin-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">February 1945: Soviet leader Joseph Stalin (1879 \u2013 1953) in military uniform at the Yalta Conference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Russian government was able to hide the full extent of the Holodomor from the world until the late 1980s, when some Ukrainians were moved to speak out by Moscow\u2019s cover-up of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.<\/p>\n<p><span>The \u201ccoup d\u2019etat\u201d Volodin referred to was the popular&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2014\/02\/22\/ukrainian-president-accurately-described-the-unfolding-situation-in-kiev-as-a-coup\/\"><span>ouster<\/span><\/a><span> of Ukraine\u2019s pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014 following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/70830605-7189-4ba0-a0a0-358ce226c870\/\"><span>Euromaidan<\/span><\/a><span> uprising against his rule. Yanukovych, who was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/feb\/25\/viktor-yanukovych-ukraine-corruption-mikheil-saakashvili\"><span>grotesquely corrupt<\/span><\/a><span> even by Ukraine\u2019s rather expansive standards, was found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/jan\/25\/ukraine-ex-president-viktor-yanukovych-found-guilty-of-treason\"><span>guilty of treason<\/span><\/a><span> in absentia by a Ukrainian court in 2019 because of his efforts to crush the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Trade Union House fire in Odessa <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-27275383\"><span>occurred<\/span><\/a><span> in May 2014 after a protest march was ambushed by pro-Russian critics of the Maidan movement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19944226\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Odessa-fire-Ukraine-ap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19944226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Odessa-fire-Ukraine-ap.jpg\" alt=\"In this Sunday May 4, 2014 file photo, a man lays flowers inside the burnt trade union building in Odessa, Ukraine. The pro-Russian side of the melee claimed it struck in self-defense because the marchers were planning to attack a nearby camp they had established for demonstrations of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Trade Union House was apparently set ablaze by firebombs thrown during the vicious 15-minute street battle. Forty-two people were killed by the fire, or by leaping to their deaths from the third floor where they were trapped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The circumstances around the Odessa fire remain murky eight years later, as both sides of the conflict <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/the-odessa-file-what-happened-on-may-2-2014\/a-18425200\"><span>accuse<\/span><\/a><span> each other of either deliberately or negligently setting the Trade Union House ablaze. The United Nations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2019\/05\/02\/un-mission-criticizes-probe-into-odessa-deaths-a65476\"><span>criticized<\/span><\/a><span> the Ukrainian government in 2019 for not investigating the incident thoroughly enough, while Russian officials declared a cover-up and accused the Ukrainian government of being \u201cup to the elbows in blood,\u201d a sentiment echoed in Volodin\u2019s remarks on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Volodin said there was no \u201cstatute of limitations\u201d on the crimes against humanity he charged Ukrainian officials with but castigated European agencies for supposedly overlooking Ukraine\u2019s offenses while persecuting Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cInstead of condemnation and a desire to get to the bottom of the matter, lawmakers from European parliaments, PACE and the OSCE PA stick their heads in the sand.
