Gavin Newsom backed legislation Friday that he said will challenge the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling on the Texas abortion law.<\/p>\n<p>The new bill, if passed, would allow private citizens to sue gun manufacturers if they violate the state\u2019s ban on assault weapons, The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-texas-lawsuits-california-gun-politics-b0a3cd6c9061e1ba37d6c52ae093e6c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a> reported. A fact sheet by Democratic California state Sen. Bob Hertzberg\u2019s office said individuals could seek up to $10,000 in damages to companies that \u201cmanufacture, distribute, transport, import into California, or sell assault weapons, .50 BMG rifles, ghost guns or ghost gun kits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislation mimics the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/19\/texas-abbott-signs-heartbeat-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Texas Heartbeat Act<\/a>, which allows citizens to sue abortion providers performing the procedure past six weeks of gestation, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/12\/gavin-newsom-california-texas-heartbeat-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Newsom<\/a> announced in December that he was working alongside the state legislature and Democratic California Attorney General Rob Bonta to draft legislation mirroring Texas\u2019 abortion law in order to enforce the state\u2019s gun laws. The governor made the announcement two days after the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/10\/supreme-court-allows-tx-heartbeat-act-to-stay-providers-sue-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ruling<\/a> that allowed for the Heartbeat Act to remain in effect as abortion providers sue the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGun industry greed has fueled the gun violence epidemic,\u201d Newsom said via Twitter Friday. \u201cWe are unveiling new tools to hold gun manufacturers accountable for the deaths their products cause. Period full stop. It is quite literally modeled after the law they just upheld in Texas.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/16\/arizona-alabama-states-ninth-circuit-california-assault-weapon-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: 22 States Call On 9th Circuit To Uphold Ruling Striking Down California Assault Weapons Ban)&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hertzberg <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenBobHertzberg\/status\/1494741331876352001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> via Twitter that the Court has turned its back on \u201ccommon sense\u201d and that the law is currently unjust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a just world, a woman\u2019s right to choose would be sacrosanct, and California\u2019s people would be protected from ghost guns and assault weapons,\u201d he said. \u201cSadly, a misguided Supreme Court seems determined to turn common sense on its head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Firearms Policy Coalition, a gun-rights advocacy group, vowed to challenge the bill and referred to the measures as \u201cmodern-day Jim Crow laws,\u201d the outlet reported. They pledged to \u201clitigate\u201d in order to \u201cprotect the rights and property of peaceable gun owners\u201d in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The restrictions are] really just modern-day Jim Crow laws designed to suppress the exercise of human rights the tyrants who run California don\u2019t like,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cBut a fact sheet provided by Hertzberg\u2019s office said the bill would apply to those who manufacture, distribute, transport, import into California, or sell assault weapons, .50 BMG rifles, ghost guns or ghost gun kits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Firearms Policy Coalition (@gunpolicy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gunpolicy\/status\/1494776203080880132?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 18, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The group\u2019s attorney, Erik Jaffe, wrote in a legal brief that the California law will set a precedent for other states to restrict citizens\u2019 rights to \u201cthe right to keep and bear arms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Texas succeeds in its gambit here, New York, California, New Jersey, and others will not be far behind in adopting equally aggressive gambits to not merely chill but to freeze the right to keep and bear arms,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Francisco <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/05\/california-assault-weapons-ban-overturned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reversed<\/a> California\u2019s assault weapons ban in June, arguing that the law infringes on Second Amendment rights and that other states allow citizens to own the types of rifles banned. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/22\/california-ninth-circuit-issues-stay-assault-weapons-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blocked<\/a> Benitez\u2019s ruling in a June 22 decision.
