\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">Facebook parent company Meta has announced it will be implementing a \u2018fact checking\u2019 service in its messaging platform WhatsApp, in order to counter so-called \u2018fake news\u2019 during the upcoming French presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Digital messaging service WhatsApp is launching a new \u2018fact checking\u2019 service implemented in France, according to an announcement made by the service\u2019s parent company, Meta.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The move is part of the company\u2019s efforts to tackle so-called \u2018fake news\u2019 during the upcoming French presidential election, with the Silicon Valley giant also announcing new anti-disinfo measures for its Instagram and Facebook platforms.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/fr\/news\/2022\/02\/elections-francaises-2022-une-serie-dinitiatives-dediees-sur-facebook-instagram-et-whatsapp-pour-aider-les-citoyens-a-lire-et-a-decrypter-linformation-en-ligne\/\">post<\/a> on the company\u2019s French-language website, a service allowing WhatsApp users to submit video, audio, and other content to so-called \u2018fact checkers\u2019 to be verified was launched on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The service is being operated by&nbsp;<em>Agence France-Presse,<\/em> which Meta bills as the company\u2019s \u2018fact-checking partner\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis new, unprecedented service in France \u2013 which comes in addition to the reporting tools available on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger \u2013 marks an important step in the fight against false information by allowing all users of the WhatsApp application in France to easily access the information verification work of a media recognized for its expertise in this field,\u201d a statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has also promised that it will make \u201csignificant efforts to combat the dissemination of false information\u201d on its platforms, saying that it will \u201cremove content\u201d that violates the company\u2019s \u201cCommunity Standards\u201d,<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the company claims that it will target \u201cthe most serious categories of false information, including content that is intended to limit voter turnout or likely to lead to imminent violence or physical harm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Also being set up as part of ramped-up anti-disinformation measures are campaigns aimed at increasing the \u201cmedia literacy\u201d of the general population, which will be rolled out on Facebook, Instagram and Mark Zuckerberg \u2014 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2019\/07\/09\/mark-zuckerberg-admits-facebook-interfered-in-political-speech-before-irish-abortion-referendum\/\">openly admitted<\/a> that the company actively interfered in political speech in the run-up to Ireland\u2019s seminal referendum on abortion in 2018, with the company blocking pro-life ads on the platform ahead of the public vote.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians in India have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/facebook-interfering-with-india-s-electoral-democracy-congress-writes-to-mark-zuckerberg\/story-3XAeoQ04jYRbWIWT5MqrSP.html\">accused<\/a> the Facebook platform of meddling in the country\u2019s electoral democracy, with the social media giant reportedly giving \u201cfavourable treatment on election-related issues\u201d to certain political groups.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, privacy changes made to the WhatsApp app have led to serious information privacy concerns from both users as well as government officials, with Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/didier-reynders-threatens-sanctions-against-whatsapp-in-consumer-protection-case\/\">reporting<\/a> that the EU is now threatening Meta with sanctions over how the messaging app gathers user data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not in a dialogue around a simple cup of tea; we are asking them to address real concerns,\u201d the publication reports&nbsp;European
