(Getty Images)\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\t\t\t<span class=\"text-gray text-xs md:text-lg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/author\/patrick-hauf\/\" title=\"Posts by Patrick Hauf\" class=\"author url fn text-red-700\" rel=\"author\">Patrick Hauf<\/a> \u2022 February 17, 2022 2:05 pm<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Lawmakers in red states this week passed sweeping abortion restrictions, a move pro-life advocates say anticipates the Supreme Court will overturn <em>Roe<\/em> v. <em>Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Florida House of Representatives passed a 15-week abortion ban Wednesday, one day after lawmakers in West Virginia and Arizona passed near-identical bills. The 15-week threshold mimics that of the Mississippi law up for debate at the Supreme Court in <em>Dobbs<\/em> v. <em>Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/em>. Each state has passed the ban in at least one chamber and appears set to sign it into law in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Susan Liebel, state director of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, said the bans show legislators in these states &#8220;have an expectation that the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision will, at a minimum, uphold a ban on abortion after 15 weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;An overwhelming majority of Americans reject abortion extremism and support these common-sense limits,&#8221; Liebel told the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>. &#8220;We have great hope that all states will soon be able to enact the consensus of their people, while the pro-life movement continues striving for the day when all children and their mothers are protected in our laws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If the Supreme Court overturns <em>Roe<\/em> this year, states would be free to restrict abortion prior to fetal viability, which is considered roughly 24 weeks. Even a partial overhaul of <em>Roe<\/em> could still alter the definition of fetal viability to uphold Mississippi&#8217;s 15-week ban. By defining viability at 15 weeks, the Court could keep <i>Roe<\/i>&nbsp;intact while still upholding the Mississippi law.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Republican-led states are prepared for either scenario. A dozen <a href=\"https:\/\/reproductiverights.org\/maps\/what-if-roe-fell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/reproductiverights.org\/maps\/what-if-roe-fell\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645201283242000&amp;usg=AOvVaw19TEg3Juz13DTg_llU1W3n\">states<\/a> have &#8220;trigger bans&#8221; in place that outlaw abortion if <em>Roe<\/em> is overturned. Another five states have pre-<em>Roe<\/em> bans that would be reenacted if the decision is overturned.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Polling <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/only-on-ap-us-supreme-court-abortion-religion-health-2c569aa7934233af8e00bef4520a8fa8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/only-on-ap-us-supreme-court-abortion-religion-health-2c569aa7934233af8e00bef4520a8fa8&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645201283242000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1VBdpv4kjchcO73fWmH08g\">data<\/a> show 65 percent of Americans believe abortion should usually be illegal in the second trimester, which begins at 14 weeks. At 15 weeks, <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/15-facts-at-15-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/15-facts-at-15-weeks\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645201283242000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2jHqRfLyMGs14SUow1R8NH\">fetuses<\/a> have all their major organs and can respond to taste and touch. Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/courts\/abortion-clinics-supreme-court-defense-rests-on-debunked-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/courts\/abortion-clinics-supreme-court-defense-rests-on-debunked-study\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645201283242000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0qESuGxwa6IFh91TMdMcPN\">research<\/a> shows fetuses can feel pain as early as 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Florida, even after its sharp red turn in recent election cycles, has remained one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/late-term-abortion-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/late-term-abortion-stats\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645201283242000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1jhHztZ1SFWG-MAKuq7n1V\">top<\/a> states for late-term abortions, with nearly a thousand after 20 weeks in 2019. In 2020, the state had more than 3,000 abortions past 15 weeks, <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-reporting-florida-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-reporting-florida-2020\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645201283243000&amp;usg=AOvVaw11KZBZ16_3oHKvJ3cKhYh1\">according<\/a> to the Charlotte Lozier Institute.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Republicans in at least nine states, including Florida, have proposed six-week abortion bans that mimic Texas&#8217;s civilian-enforced law that led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/texas-abortion-ban-drop-0d1eb3d0-b9fc-4dac-a52b-5f589b5423a9.html?utm_campaign=organic&amp;utm_medium=socialshare&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.axios.com\/texas-abortion-ban-drop-0d1eb3d0-b9fc-4dac-a52b-5f589b5423a9.html?utm_campaign%3Dorganic%26utm_medium%3Dsocialshare%26utm_source%3Dtwitter&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1645201283243000&amp;usg=AOvVaw30scVieKy3FgjzkzdBBEtK\">60 percent<\/a> drop in abortions in its first month. Two additional states proposed trigger bans, although none of these bills have been advanced.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jeanne Mancini, president of the March for Life, said the passage of 15-week bans and the introduction of more aggressive restrictions show a &#8220;tremendous amount of excitement among the pro-life grassroots&#8221; ahead of the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;After five decades, a lot of frustration has built up among the American people and their elected representatives precisely because <em>Roe<\/em> robbed them of their say in protecting vulnerable life in their state,&#8221; Mancini told the <em>Free Beacon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Supreme Court&#8217;s decision on <em>Dobbs<\/em> is expected later this year.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Latest News Florida, West Virginia, and Arizona to sign 15-week abortion bans into law  Anti-abortion protesters in front of the Supreme Court.
