If they don\u2019t cooperate, they could face arrest,\u201d The New York Times reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/02\/15\/world\/canada-protests-news\/what-responses-will-the-canadian-government-take-after-invoking-the-emergencies-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The development comes as Trudeau doubled down against Freedom Convoy protesters on Monday, invoking emergency powers to stop those opposing his COVID-19 vaccine mandates for truck drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll always defend the rights of Canadians to peaceful assembly and to freedom of expression. We\u2019ll also do whatever is necessary to reinforce the principles, values, and institutions that keep all Canadians free \u2013 and that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing with the Emergencies Act,\u201d Trudeau tweeted on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019ll always defend the rights of Canadians to peaceful assembly and to freedom of expression. It would allow Ottawa to designate protected places and force privately-owned tow truck companies to provide their services to the city,\u201d Rebel News&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebelnews.com\/trudeau_plans_to_invoke_emergencies_act_to_deal_with_freedom_convoy_protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The act has never been invoked, although its precursor, the War Measures Act, was invoked by Trudeau\u2019s father when he was prime minister in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>According to Canada\u2019s CTV News, several tow truck companies have sided with the Freedom Convoy and have refused to tow anyone associated with the protest. Now these drivers could face consequences.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>The chaos has also escalated in another major way this week as Ottawa\u2019s chief of police Peter Sloly resigned on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the onset of this demonstration, I have done everything possible to keep this city safe and put an end to this unprecedented and unforeseeable crisis,\u201d Sloly said in a resignation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/sloly-ottawa-resigns-behaviour-leadership-1.6352295?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly has resigned according to a senior source close to the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian Lilley (@brianlilley) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianlilley\/status\/1493620941628268545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe have acquired new resources and enforcement tools, and stood up the new Integrated Command Centre. I am confident the Ottawa Police Service is now better positioned to end this occupation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Wire editor emeritus Ben Shapiro predicted Trudeau\u2019s attempts to malign and discredit the Freedom Convoy protesters as extremists are going to fail and \u201cbackfire\u201d during a recent appearance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/ben-shapiro-rips-justin-trudeau-for-characterizing-protesters-as-fringe-minority-it-has-backfired\">Fox News<\/a>. The Daily Wire previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/its-going-to-backfire-ben-shapiro-predicts-trudeau-backlash-for-attacking-freedom-convoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cIndividuals are trying to blockade our economy, our democracy, and our fellow citizens\u2019 daily lives. It has to stop,\u201d the prime minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/freedom-convoy-raises-nearly-6m-trudeau-demands-truckers-stop-1677073\">said<\/a>. \u201cPeople of Ottawa don\u2019t deserve to be harassed in their own neighborhoods. They don\u2019t deserve to be confronted with the inherent violence of a swastika flying on a street corner or Confederate flag.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Shapiro said that Trudeau\u2019s repeated attempts to dismiss the protesters as a \u201csmall, fringe minority\u201d and lump them all in with extremists, racists, and Nazis are bound to fail.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis sort of tactic, which Trudeau is picking up from the American Left, is likely to be wildly unsuccessful,\u201d Shapiro said on Fox News. \u201cEverybody can look at this convoy and see that they are not flying Nazi flags en masse, that these are not radical right-wingers. This attempt to paint everybody who is opposed to the authoritarian tactics of the authorities on COVID as Nazis and far-right crazies \u2013 it\u2019s going to backfire.
