This resulted in officer complaints over the timing of the vote, and it was postponed.<\/p>\n<p>The vote started on Thursday afternoon and continued for 24 hours, \u201cgiving officers on three shifts a chance to vote at work.\u201d Union and non-union members were eligible to take part. The vote \u201cwas open to those who were represented by the collective bargaining agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/12\/politics\/capitol-police-no-confidence\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Vote totals varied for each boss but each of the seven \u2014 acting Chief Yoganada Pittman, two assistant chiefs, three deputy chiefs and a captain in the division that staffs the Capitol building \u2014 were found not to have the confidence of rank-and-file officers, according to two sources who shared the vote totals with CNN.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pittman is the current acting Chief. She was sworn in on January 8, after former Chief Steven Sund resigned following the January 6 riots at the Capitol building.<\/p>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_3926F65A-EA3C-977E-8305-994068B00499\">\n<div id=\"bx-campaign-1245919\" class=\"bxc bx-base bx-custom bx-active-step-1 bx-campaign-1245919 bx-brand-17034 bx-width-full bx-type-agilityzone bx-has-close-x-1 bx-has-close-inside bx-fx-fade bx-impress\" aria-hidden=\"false\">\n<div class=\"bx-slab\">\n<div class=\"bx-align\">\n<div id=\"bx-creative-1245919\" class=\"bx-creative bx-creative-1245919\">\n<div class=\"bx-wrap\">\n<div class=\"bx-ally-label\">\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_3926F65A-EA3C-977E-8305-994068B00499\">On January 7, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/07\/us\/politics\/sergeant-at-arms-resigns.html\">The New York Times<\/a> reported on the resignation of Sund, who was the acting Chief leading up to and during the attack.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cSteven Sund, the Capitol Police chief, will also leave his position on Jan. 16 after Ms. Pelosi called for his resignation, saying \u2018Mr. Sund, he hasn\u2019t even called us since this happened.&#8217;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_3926F65A-EA3C-977E-8305-994068B00499\">Others also stepped down from their posts. On January 7, then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he \u201crequested and has received Senate Sergeant at Arms Michael Stenger\u2019s immediate resignation,\u201d according to reporting by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/insurrection-at-the-capitol\/2021\/01\/07\/954518775\/senate-democratic-leader-chuck-schumer-vows-to-fire-senate-sergeant-at-arms\">NPR<\/a> at the time. Before Stenger officially resigned as the Senate Sergeant at Arms, then-Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/insurrection-at-the-capitol\/2021\/01\/07\/954518775\/senate-democratic-leader-chuck-schumer-vows-to-fire-senate-sergeant-at-arms\">NPR<\/a> that he would fire Stenger if he did not resign before the \u201cDemocrats have a majority in the Senate.\u201d The Sergeant at Arms of the House, Paul D. Irving, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/07\/us\/politics\/sergeant-at-arms-resigns.html\">resigned<\/a> after the events of January 6.<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_3926F65A-EA3C-977E-8305-994068B00499\">\n<p>On January 26, new Acting Chief Pittman spoke to members of the House Appropriations Committee, in a \u201cclosed-door briefing,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/26\/us\/politics\/capitol-police-national-guard.html\">The New York Times<\/a>. In a prepared <a href=\"https:\/\/int.nyt.com\/data\/documenttools\/capitol-police-sergeant-at-arms\/4edd6c362b9303dc\/full.pdf\">statement<\/a>, she apologized on behalf of the Department. The statement reads, in part:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cLet me be clear: the Department should have been more prepared for this attack. By January 4th, the Department knew that the January 6th event would not be like any of the previous protests held in 2020. We knew that militia groups and white supremacists organizations would be attending. We also knew that some of these participants were intending to bring firearms and other weapons to the event. We knew that there was a strong potential for violence and that Congress was the target. The Department prepared in order to meet these challenges, but we did not do enough.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_3926F65A-EA3C-977E-8305-994068B00499\">\n<p>Pittman explained former Chief Sund\u2019s concern two days before the attack took place, noting that on January 4, Sund \u201crequested that the Capitol Police Board declare a state of emergency and authorize a request to secure National Guard support.\u201d She acknowledged that the Board denied Sund\u2019s request, instead encouraging him to \u201ccontact the DC National Guard to determine how many Guardsman could be sent to the Capitol on short notice, which he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_3926F65A-EA3C-977E-8305-994068B00499\">The no-confidence vote of the Capitol Police last week comes after officers have reportedly told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/12\/politics\/capitol-police-no-confidence\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> \u201cthat intelligence and operational failures left them vulnerable to the attack on January 6, and said they worry current leadership is incapable of managing future incidents.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>Acting Chief Pittman released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscp.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/acting-chief-pittman-statement-no-confidence-vote\">statement<\/a> on Saturday following the no-confidence vote, saying she is \u201ccommitted to ensuring every officer gets what they need and deserve.<\/p>\n<p>Her statement is in full below:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s been just over one month since one of our nation\u2019s darkest days, and the trauma is still incredibly raw and difficult for the many officers who fought heroically on the 6th. Since being sworn in on January 8th, my executive team and I have made the well-being of our officers our top priority. While progress has been made, more work remains.
