Marsha Blackburn and Connecticut Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal, seeks to increase safety standards in the wake of child safety concerns.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Big Tech has failed children &amp; betrayed its trust, putting profits above safety. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarshaBlackburn?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MarshaBlackburn<\/a> &amp; I are introducing the Kids Online Safety Act to give kids &amp; parents the tools &amp; safeguards to protect against toxic content\u2014&amp; hold Big Tech accountable for dangerous algorithms. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MmMxAk4Hwd\">pic.twitter.com\/MmMxAk4Hwd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Richard Blumenthal (@SenBlumenthal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenBlumenthal\/status\/1493950726544015360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposed bill requires social media platforms to provide a safe default environment and to help prevent potentially destructive impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legislation also requires independent audits and supports public scrutiny from experts and academic researchers to ensure that parents and policymakers know whether social media platforms are taking meaningful steps to address risks to kids,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blumenthal.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press\/release\/blumenthal-and-blackburn-introduce-comprehensive-kids-online-safety-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from Blumenthal\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting our kids and teens online is critically important, particularly since COVID increased our reliance on technology,\u201d Blackburn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn hearings over the last year, Senator Blumenthal and I have heard countless stories of physical and emotional damage affecting young users, and Big Tech\u2019s unwillingness to change. The Kids Online Safety Act will address those harms by setting necessary safety guiderails for online platforms to follow that will require transparency and give parents more peace of mind,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Blumenthal also highlighted the importance of internet safety as a top priority for children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis measure makes kids\u2019 safety an internet priority,\u201d Blumenthal wrote.&nbsp;\u201cBig Tech has brazenly failed children and betrayed its trust, putting profits above safety. Seared in my memory\u2014and motivating my passion\u2014are countless harrowing stories from Connecticut and across the country about heartbreaking loss, destructive emotional rabbit holes, and addictive dark places rampant on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <em>Kids Online Safety Act<\/em> would finally give kids and their parents the tools and safeguards they need to protect against toxic content\u2014and hold Big Tech accountable for deeply dangerous algorithms. Algorithms driven by eyeballs and dollars will no longer hold sway. I will fight for swift passage alongside Senator Blackburn, my partner in this effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blumenthal.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/kids_online_safety_act_-_one_pager.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summary<\/a> of the bill noted that the proposed legislation followed the research of five hearings in the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, academic research, media reporting and stories from families.&nbsp;The research noted, \u201cSocial media can foster body image issues, create addictionlike patterns of use, promote products that are harmful or illegal for young audiences, and fuel destructive bullying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-knows-instagram-is-toxic-for-teen-girls-company-documents-show-11631620739?mod=hp_lead_pos7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> cited a 2020 study that found, \u201cThirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.\u201d The report also noted, \u201cComparisons on Instagram can change how young women view and describe themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislation has been endorsed by several child safety organizations, including Common Sense Media, the American Psychological Association, the 5Rights Foundation, American Compass, the Internet Accountability Project, American Principles Project, and the Digital Progress Institute.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire\u2019s first original film, Shut In, has made its cinematic debut, being met with rave reviews.
