\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">Face coverings contributed to a patient\u2019s death in 2020 after they \u201caggravated\u201d communication problems between doctors resulting in the administration of a fatal overdose, a coroner\u2019s report has ruled.<\/p>\n<p>The use of face coverings in one of Britain\u2019s socialised National Health Service\u2019s hospitals contributed to the death of a patient after a junior doctor administered&nbsp;50 kg\/mg instead of a 15 mg\/kg dose measurement of phenytoin \u2014 an anti-epileptic drug \u2014 after he misheard a senior doctor\u2019s orders which, it was determined, were muffled by a mask.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The victim&nbsp;John Skinner was admitted to the hospital in May 2020 after suffering from seizures, but later died of acute heart failure and phenytoin toxicity within 15 minutes of being given the fatal dose of the medication at&nbsp;Watford General hospital,&nbsp;<em>The Telegraph<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/02\/15\/doctors-face-masks-aggravated-communication-failure-led-fatal\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The unnamed junior doctor gave Skinner 3,500 mg of&nbsp;phenytoin which considerably exceeded the NHS\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/phenytoin\/#:~:text=Dosage,400mg%2C%20taken%20as%202%20doses\">recommended<\/a> daily dose of&nbsp;200mg and 500mg a day, to be taken as 1 or 2 doses.<\/p>\n<p>Graham Danbury, who has been the assistant coroner for Hertfordshire since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coronersociety.org.uk\/coroners\/8953\/\">1987<\/a>, found that the doctor\u2019s face coverings had contributed to a \u201cfailure in verbal communication\u201d that had resulted in the overdose, and in a \u2018prevention of future deaths\u2019 report, wrote that this \u201cforeseeable\u201d tragedy had the potential happen again unless the NHS updated its procedures.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Danbury did not however push for the removal of masks for healthcare staff and instead suggested hospitals should create procedures that&nbsp;use \u201cclearer and less confusable means of communication and expression of number\u201d to minimise the risk of&nbsp;future deaths<\/p>\n<p>West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, who are responsible for Watford General hospital released a statement in response to Skinner\u2019s death claiming that they now have \u201ca comprehensive action plan\u201d in place to \u201censure that lessons are learned from this incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There are no reports of any arrests or criminal investigations that occurred in response to Mr Skinner\u2019s interfere with communication, and as a result, have removed the mask requirements and advice for pupils at schools with Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi declaring they \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/02\/11\/they-inhibit-learning-uk-defends-ending-school-mask-mandates\/\">inhibit learning<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s&nbsp;Department of Education also released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/01\/08\/mask-strike-english-schoolchildren-refuse-to-wear-masks\/\">report<\/a>&nbsp;in January 2022 that found that \u201c80 per cent of pupils reported\u201d that masks \u201cmade it difficult to communicate\u201d and 55 per cent felt wearing one \u201cmade learning more difficult\u201d \u2013 almost all secondary school leaders and teachers supported their pupils\u2019 findings as 94 per cent believed that face coverings at school had \u201cmade communication between teachers and students more difficult\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The report also published that masks concealing a speaker\u2019s lips were also found to lead \u201cto lower performance, lower confidence scores, and increased perceived
