Azeem was sentenced to life in prison in 2019, but on Monday a court ruled he could be released after his parents granted him forgiveness, saying that because his parents forgave him for murdering his sister, Islamic law ruled he must be released.<\/p>\n<p>Sardar Mehboob, Azeem\u2019s attorney told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/02\/15\/pakistan-qandeel-baloch-brother-honor-killing-acquittal\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=wp_main\">The Washington Post<\/a>, \u201cThe appeal court has acquitted the accused in the case on the grounds of a family settlement and lack of evidence\u2026.There is nothing left in the case. The convict will be released soon from the prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baloch had auditioned for \u201cPakistan Idol\u201d and been rejected, but a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QO-alf0lBgY?t=4m34s\">video<\/a>&nbsp;of her reaction went viral. The Post reported, \u201cShe leveraged her brief moment of social media fame to attract thousands of fans to her Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts, where she regularly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/images.dawn.com\/news\/1175874\">posted&nbsp;<\/a>pictures and videos of herself, some deemed provocative in Pakistan, which led to online trolling and abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After he confessed to murdering his sister, Azeem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/arts-and-entertainment\/wp\/2016\/07\/18\/before-she-was-murdered-by-her-brother-in-an-apparent-honor-killing-who-was-qandeel-baloch\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cI was determined either to kill myself or kill her\u2026I have no regrets. \u2026 Money matters, but family honor is more important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Azeem\u2019s mother, Anwar Bibi, said, I am happy over the acquittal of my son, but we are still sad for our daughter\u2019s loss\u2026.I am thankful to the court, which ordered the release of my son at our request,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/pakistani-court-acquits-models-killer-on-parents-pardon\/2022\/02\/14\/90897084-8da2-11ec-8ddd-52136988d263_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_13\">according&nbsp;<\/a>to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the Pakistani Parliament unanimously approved anti-honor killing and anti-rape bills; if a killer received a death sentence, relatives of the victim could pardon the killer but there would still be a mandatory life sentence of twelve-and-a-half years.<\/p>\n<p>The Post took note of those who harshly criticized the court\u2019s decision:<\/p>\n<p>Pakistani human rights activist Usama Khilji: \u201cWhat message does this give to men &amp; women in Pakistan?
