The suit is seeking civil penalties in the range of hundreds of billions of dollars. Paxton said in a statement that the company\u2019s recording and storage of facial geometry in photographs that users uploaded to the platform from 2010 to 2021 resulted in \u201ctens of millions of violations\u201d of Texas state law.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Paxton said in a statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Facebook has been secretly harvesting Texans\u2019 most personal information\u2014photos and videos\u2014for its own corporate profit. Texas law has prohibited such harvesting without informed consent for over 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>While ordinary Texans have been using Facebook to innocently share photos of loved ones with friends and family, we now know that Facebook has been brazenly ignoring Texas law for the last decade.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Facebook has faced legal trouble over its facial-recognition practice in the past. The company previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/03\/01\/judge-approves-facebooks-650m-settlement-over-intrusive-facial-recognition\/\">settled another lawsuit over the tech for around $650 million.<\/a> Texas alleges that Facebook\u2019s facial-recognition system ignored the state\u2019s legal requirements for recording users\u2019 facial features.<\/p>\n<p>A draft of the complaint seen by the&nbsp;<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, states: \u201cFor over a decade, while holding itself out as a trusted meeting place for Texans to connect and share special moments with family and friends, Facebook was secretly capturing, disclosing, unlawfully retaining\u2014and profiting off of\u2014Texans\u2019 most personal and highly sensitive information: records of their facial geometries, which Texas law refers to as biometric identifiers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/texas-sues-meta-over-facebooks-facial-recognition-practices-11644854794?mod=hp_lead_pos3\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Lucas Nolan is a reporter for Breitbart News covering issues of free speech and online censorship.
