John Kennedy (R-LA) to agree.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>If confirmed, Mathis would be Biden\u2019s first judicial appointment in a state represented by two Republican senators. Kennedy was the sole Judiciary Republican to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/us-senate-panel-advances-first-biden-appellate-pick-using-trump-era-strategy-2022-02-10\/\">vote<\/a> to advance Mathis.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans, including rank-and-file and leadership, had urged Kennedy to vote against advancing Mathis.<\/p>\n<p>Mathis\u2019s advancement through the Senate Judiciary Committee especially <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/593690-senate-panel-advances-appeals-court-nominee-despite-objections-from\">carries<\/a> weight as he faced fierce opposition from his home state senators, Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Bill Hagerty (R-TN).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>During his confirmation hearing in January, Blackburn expressed concerns that Mathis was unable to answer \u201cbasic\u201d questions about the Constitution, including the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy had also raised concerns during a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting that the Biden White House did not meaningfully discuss the nomination with Blackburn and Hagerty, despite his vote to advance Mathis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes no sense to me why the executive branch wants to lead with its chin and not meaningfully consider the opinion of the home state senators. By not doing that you automatically start two votes down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as Peter Schweizer\u2019s new book,&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Red-Handed-American-Elites-Helping-China\/dp\/0063061147\/?tag=breitbart035-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\"><em>Red-Handed: How American Elites Get Rich Helping China Win<\/em><\/a>, revealed that Vitter has been involved in lucrative deals with Chinese surveillance company China Electronics Group, which produces cameras to monitor Uyghurs in CCP concentration camps. Vitter is one of the 23 former U.S. senators and congressmen to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/31\/red-handed-23-former-u-s-senators-and-congressmen-who-lobby-for-chinese-military-or-chinese-intelligence-linked-companies\/\">lobbied<\/a> for Chinese military or- intelligence-linked companies after leaving office.<\/p>\n<p>Vitter was known in his time in the Senate for his conservative bonafides and hardline stance on immigration, but became <a href=\"https:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/dc\/larry-flynt-to-david-vitter-donate-your-diapers-to-gulf-relief\">ensnared<\/a> in a prostitution scandal toward the end of his career, including allegations he has a \u201cdiaper fetish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vitter confessed after a journalist found the senator\u2019s number in the \u201cD.C. Madam\u201d Deborah Jeane Palfrey\u2019s phone records.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy Vitter, Vitter\u2019s wife, is currently the judge for the United States District Court in the Eastern District of Lousiana. Then-President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/2018\/01\/24\/vitters-wife-nominated-by-trump-for-federal-judgeship-in-louisiana\/\">nominated<\/a> her for the position; she was confirmed by a 52-member Republican majority.<\/p>\n<p>Vitter\u2019s advocacy for Mathis could be seen as a way to help secure a more lucrative federal court position for his wife.
