Text included with the photo claims it is \u201cThe heart of a person who consumes pork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A reverse image search revealed the image was originally posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BlD0hc0Aj4k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> in July 2018 with the caption, \u201cParasite paradise #porcine cysticercosis.\u201d Porcine cysticercosis is \u201can infection of pigs caused by the larval stage of <em>Taenia solium<\/em>, a tapeworm that causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/taeniasis-cysticercosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">taeniosis<\/a> in humans,\u201d according to a 2010 study published in the scientific journal <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosntds\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pntd.0000594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases<\/a>. The study explains the disease is common in pigs from the developing world and \u201cposes a serious public health risk and causes significant economic losses in pig production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several months later in October 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bo2cIGOjqXH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> account \u201cAnatomiae\u201d shared the same picture of the heart with a Portuguese-language caption that reads, \u201cSee this rare case of cysticercosis in a pig heart.\u201d The account is associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abepepsi.com.br\/credenciados2\/Dr.-R%C3%B4mulo-Oliveira\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Romulo Oliveira<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicosbrasil.com\/profissional\/ygor-minassa-alves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Ygor Minassa<\/a>, self-described \u201cPhysicians, Vascular Surgeons and Teachers,\u201d according to their <a href=\"https:\/\/pszerado.com.br\/projeto-2022\/?utm_source=ig&amp;utm_medium=influencer_social&amp;utm_campaign=anatomiae&amp;utm_content=bio&amp;utm_term=captacao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bo2cIGOjqXH\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"><\/blockquote>\n<p>The end of the picture\u2019s caption warns, \u201cThis post was shared on Facebook with wrong information saying that it was the heart of a person who eats a lot of pork. Beware of fake news!\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/06\/21\/fact-check-image-heart-shaped-pond-zimbabwe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show A Heart-Shaped Pond In Zimbabwe?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an emailed statement to Check Your Fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/biographies\/stulak-john-m-m-d\/bio-20055406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. John Stulak<\/a>, professor of surgery in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, confirmed \u201cthe picture is almost certainly not a human heart\u201d and \u201cresembles a pig heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A similar photo of a pig heart with cysts as a result of cysticercosis can be seen in a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Taenia-solium-Cysticercosis-in-Sub-Saharan-Africa%3A-Mwang%27onde\/40e753045ffa59ede44c56e48e60abaa3083602b\/figure\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journal article<\/a> titled, \u201cTaenia solium Cysticercosis in Sub-Saharan Africa: Perspectives for a Better Control.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parasites\/cysticercosis\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> notes on its website that while cysticercosis can occur in humans, they \u201cdo not get cysticercosis by eating undercooked pork.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A picture shared on Instagram purportedly shows a human heart after eating pork.
