The World Anti-Doping Agency banned it on these grounds, and athletes have been banned for using it, including a Russian bobsledder named Nadezhda Sergeeva, who was disqualified from the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat this drug does is actually make your heart work more efficiently. It doesn\u2019t change your blood pressure very much or change your heart rate. An athlete wouldn\u2019t get jittery or necessarily feel all that different, but they would theoretically be able to perform at a higher level for longer. It would increase their endurance, potentially,\u201d Dr. Elizabeth Murray of the University of Rochester Medical Center <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfsb.com\/sports\/trimetazidine-drug-banned-by-wada-makes-your-heart-work-more-efficiently\/article_5c02825b-b0b2-5944-99f9-ff7d87ebbc80.html\"><span>explained<\/span><\/a><span> on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Dr. Murray, who specializes in pediatric emergency medicine, added that it would be very unusual to administer trimetazidine to someone as young as Valieva for medical reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI cannot imagine a figure skater taking this drug. It\u2019s one big head-scratcher. I can\u2019t imagine a scenario where she would have taken it,\u201d Dr. Michael Joyner of the Mayo Clinic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/news\/beijing-olympics\/russian-skating-drug-rcna15634\"><span>agreed<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The AP said it was \u201cunclear whether Valieva applied for a therapeutic use exemption or has a history of heart problems.\u201d The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its testing agency refused to comment on the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Russian government also refused to comment and denounced everyone who is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs always, not knowing the essence, everyone began to yell left and right. We will not join this orderly line of screamers,\u201d growled Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Valieva, until now a breakout star at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2022\/02\/05\/nolte-record-low-ratings-for-nbcs-opening-coverage-of-genocide-games\/\"><span>little-watched<\/span><\/a><span> Beijing Olympics, put on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/winter-olympics-figure-skating-kamila-valieva-quad-f75047a201bfa8d058566fea1239fbed\"><span>spectacular performance<\/span><\/a><span> that helped the Russian (well, the Russian Olympic Committee) squad win a gold medal on Monday at the three-day team competition.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The medal ceremony scheduled for Tuesday was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/beijing\/2022\/02\/09\/olympic-figure-skating-team-medals-delayed-russian-drug-test\/6717526001\/\"><span>postponed<\/span><\/a><span> as rumors of a doping scandal began to swirl. Details of the scandal were kept under wraps as long as possible, but after word leaked that the person who tested positive was a minor, observers quickly deduced it had to be Valieva \u2013 the only underage member of the six-member ROC team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If the Russian team is disqualified due to Valieva\u2019s drug test, the U.S. team will take the gold medal, with Japan elevated to silver and Canada to bronze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/russian-doping-controversy-leaves-credibility-of-olympics-teetering-on-the-edge-062431232.html\"><span>Yahoo Sports<\/span><\/a><span> said on Thursday the credibility of the entire scandal-plagued Beijing Olympics could be tottering on how the Valieva affair plays out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cReally the whole credibility of the Olympic Movement and the Paralympic Movement stands teetering on the edge of us saying that we really believe and live the values that we say we stand for,\u201d Yahoo quoted U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee chair Susanne Lyons observing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt is so important to the athletes of the world that the values of this Movement be upheld, and one of the most important values is integrity of sport. And it\u2019s just terribly upsetting to the athletes today to have that wound potentially reopened again,\u201d Lyons said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yahoo speculated Russia is working furiously behind the scenes to get a pass for Valieva on the grounds that she cannot be held responsible for taking the banned medication because she is a minor.
