They\u2019re embarrassing themselves. I think they should get on their way; go back to their homes and give back our city to its people,\u201d Watson railed against the protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Watson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trucknews.com\/transportation\/bigger-fines-coming-to-ottawa-protesters-city-explores-options-to-towing\/1003156998\/\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> he would not meet with protesters until they leave Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey\u2019ve got to get rid of all their rigs and clean up the mess they\u2019ve created in our city and give the city back to the residents,\u201d he insisted.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cSome of the press conferences we\u2019ve seen are out of a Monty Python sketch,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trendsmap.com\/twitter\/tweet\/1491503812879654915\"><span>scoffed<\/span><\/a><span>, referring to statements made by protest organizers to the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-ottawa-mayor-says-no-end-in-sight-for-trucker-convoy-protests\/\"><i><span>Globe and Mail<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span>speculated Watson was mocking Freedom Convoy organizers like Benjamin Dichter, who have demanded audiences with the Governor-General and claimed most rank-and-file police officers support the protest movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Canadian newspaper threw in a few details that evidently struck it as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montypython.com\/\">Pythonesque<\/a>, including protesters stringing up laundry between traffic pylons, making arrangements to duck out from the demonstration for Valentine\u2019s Day dates, and setting up bouncy houses for their children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Freedom Convoy protesters could have responded by comparing <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/coronavirus\/1009557\/trudeau-flees-as-trucker-convoy-enters-ottawa\">Prime Minister Justin Trudeau<\/a> to Monty Python\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BZwuTo7zKM8\">Brave Sir Robin<\/a>, but there was no record of them doing so at the time of this writing.<\/p>\n<p><span>The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2022\/02\/09\/immediately-end-protest-or-face-arrest-ottawa-police-warn-truckers.html\"><i><span>Toronto Star<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span>on Wednesday said the federal government is painting the Freedom Convoy protests as a \u201cgrave threat to Canada\u201d but \u201csettling into a back-seat role in the crisis,\u201d leaving provincial authorities and city police forces to manage the crisis:<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cThey\u2019re essentially putting their foot on the throat of all Canadians,\u201d said Bill Blair, the former Toronto police chief and federal minister for emergency preparedness, referring to the protests that have spread across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yet despite that graphic assessment, the federal government made clear Wednesday that it is not prepared to invoke emergency powers to take the reins of the crisis, which in Ottawa has dragged on for 13 days as truckers and their supporters occupy the streets around Parliament Hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAll three orders of government have a responsibility, and that\u2019s why we\u2019re all working together,\u201d Blair said, when asked if the federal government would shift to playing a leading role.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Along similar lines, Ontario Premier Doug Ford expected police and border agents to break up the protest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2022\/02\/09\/canadian-truckers-intensify-blockade-of-top-u-s-canada-border-crossing\/\"><span>blocking<\/span><\/a><span> the vital Ambassador Bridge border crossing to the United States, through which almost 30 percent of commerce between the two nations flows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe ongoing illegal occupation and blockade happening in Ontario must stop. The damage this is causing to our economy, to people\u2019s jobs and their livelihoods is totally unacceptable.
