There is not a corner of this nation where hard-working families are able to escape the noticeable impact of this \u2018inflation tax.\u2019 Inflation taxes are draining the hard-earned wages of every American, and it\u2019s causing real and severe economic pain that can no longer be ignored.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s beyond time for the Federal Reserve to tackle this issue head on, and Congress and the Administration must proceed with caution before adding more fuel to an economy already on fire,\u201d Manchin continued. \u201cAs inflation and our $30 trillion in national debt continue a historic climb, only in Washington, DC do people seem to think that spending trillions more of taxpayers\u2019 money will cure our problems, let alone inflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must get serious about the finances of our country. It\u2019s time we start acting like stewards of our economy and the money the American people entrust their government with. Now, more than ever, we must remember it is not our money, it\u2019s the American people\u2019s money. It is not our economy, it\u2019s their economy. We all have a responsibly to do all that is possible to roll back inflation and manage our debts because the longer we or the Federal Reserve waits to act, the more economic pain will be caused,\u201d Manchin concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>The senator\u2019s comments follow the Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019 release of the Consumer Price Index Thursday. The CPI found that inflation across the economy rose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.t01.htm#cpipress1.f.1\">7.5% year-over-year<\/a> between January 2021 and January 2022. That number was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/cpi.pdf\">largest annual inflation hike<\/a> since February 1982. Food prices saw a 7% annual increase, with meat, poultry, fish, and eggs leading the way with a 12.2% increase between January 2021 and 2022. Energy commodities skyrocketed on an annual basis, seeing a 39.9% increase. Fuel oil rose 46.5% year-over-year, and gasoline rose 40%. Excluding food and energy, consumer costs still jumped 6% year-over-year, breaking another 40-year record high.<\/div>\n<div>Manchin has been sounding the alarm on inflation numbers and rising costs for months. In a tweet posted to his official account in November, Manchin warned fellow Democrats that the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/manchin-warns-about-record-inflation-inflation-tax-is-real\">inflation tax is real<\/a>\u201d and that the federal government could no longer ignore the issue. \u201cBy all accounts, the threat posed by record inflation to the American people is not \u2018transitory\u2019 and is instead getting worse,\u201d Manchin wrote. \u201cFrom the grocery store to the gas pump, Americans know the inflation tax is real and DC can no longer ignore the economic pain Americans feel every day.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Concerns about inflation and the national debt also animated much of Manchin\u2019s opposition to the Biden administration\u2019s now-defunct \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d bill. \u201cInflation is real, it\u2019s not transitory. It\u2019s alarming. It\u2019s going up, not down. And I think that should be something we\u2019re concerned about,\u201d Manchin told reporters at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/manchin-pushes-further-cuts-transparency-to-build-back-better-bill-citing-inflation-cbo-score\">press gaggle<\/a> in December.<\/div>\n<p>Manchin\u2019s comments also clashed with those of President Joe Biden, who pushed his administration\u2019s continued spending and intervention in the economy as the solution to rising costs. \u201cBut the fact is that \u2014 if we are able to do the things that I am talking about here, it will bring down the cost for average families.
