Richard Blumenthal and his wife bought and sold securities in the stock trading platform Robinhood while the senator and his colleagues called for investigations of the popular app.<\/p>\n<p>Blumenthal, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/wealthiest-members-congress-house-senate-finances-2021-12#8-sen-richard-blumenthal-a-democrat-from-connecticut-85231232-18\">wealthiest<\/a> members of Congress, reported that a limited liability corporation bought and sold Robinhood shares on behalf of his wife in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/558083711\/Blumenthal-February-Trades\">February<\/a>, October, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/558089104\/Blumenthal-October-November-Trades\">November<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/558083508\/Blumenthal-December-Trades\">December<\/a> 2021. Blumenthal failed to report the December trades in a timely fashion, violating a federal law that mandates reporting of financial activities.<\/p>\n<p>Robinhood has been in the crosshairs of federal regulators since the January 2021 meme stock craze, when day traders primarily associated with the WallStreetBets subreddit <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/28\/robinhood-stops-trading-gamestop-amc-wallstreetbets-reddit-nokia-amc\/\">used<\/a> the app to drive up the price of stocks like GameStop, AMC and BlackBerry. After temporarily shutting down trades for several meme stocks, the company was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/01\/robinhood-finra-fine-70-million-outages-misleading-information\/\">forced<\/a> to pay $70 million in fines and restitution to users. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/03\/janet-yellen-convenes-meeting-of-top-financial-regulators-to-discuss-meme-stocks\/\"><strong>(RELATED: Janet Yellen Convenes Meeting Of Top Financial Regulators To Discuss Meme Stocks)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Peter L. Malkin Family 2000 LLC purchased between $500,000 and $1 million worth of Robinhood stock on Feb. 1, 2021 as calls to regulate the company began <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/01\/28\/robinhood-bipartisan-banning-trades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heating<\/a> up. However, that transaction was not filed with the Secretary of the Senate until Feb. 2, 2022, outside of the 45-day reporting window required by the STOCK Act, which regulates the financial transactions of members of Congress, their top aides and executive branch officials.<\/p>\n<p>The trades were first <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/blumenthal-bought-robinhood-shares-as-he-called-for-congress-to-investigate-gamestop-trading-frenzy\/\">reported<\/a> by the Washington Free Beacon.<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for Blumenthal told the Daily Caller that the senator \u201cowns no individual stocks and his wife has no influence or control over her assets, which are primarily held in family trusts.\u201d She did not address the potential STOCK Act violation.<\/p>\n<p>STOCK Act violations are widespread, as is the perception that members of Congress use their positions to make beneficial stock trades. Thirty-five members of Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/12\/unusual-whales-stock-trades-congress-members-ban-proposals-nancy-pelosi\/\">outperformed<\/a> a major S&amp;P 500 index fund in 2021, an analysis conducted by the financial analysis website Unusual Whales found. Several members, most notably Democratic Reps. Cindy <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/09\/cindy-axne-stock-trades-house-financial-services-committee\/\">Axne<\/a> of Iowa and Tom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tom-malinowski-puts-stock-trades-blind-trust-congress-finances-transparency-2021-8\">Malinowski<\/a> of New Jersey, have revealed stock trades involving companies that they conduct direct oversight of through their committee work.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals to ban members of Congress from trading individual stocks have been met with a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/10\/democrat-virginia-elaine-luria-congress-stock-trade-ban-bullshit\/\">mixed<\/a> reception.
