Elaine Luria called the push to ban lawmakers\u2019 from trading stocks \u201cbullshit,\u201d saying that it fed a false narrative that members of Congress are \u201cinherently bad or corrupt,\u201d Punchbowl News reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already have the STOCK Act that requires people to report stock trades,\u201d Luria <a href=\"https:\/\/email.punchbowl.news\/t\/ViewEmail\/t\/08B9F6CABF6820E72540EF23F30FEDED\/30B292E7B5B3A685981D23A7722F2DCD?alternativeLink=False\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> Punchbowl News. \u201cWhy would you assume \u2013 I mean, the people that you\u2019re electing to represent you, it makes no sense that you\u2019re going to automatically assume that they\u2019re going to use their position for some nefarious means or to benefit themselves. So I\u2019m very strongly opposed to any legislation like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luria owns between $1 million-$5 million of shares in Facebook and NVIDIA, according to her most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/disclosures-clerk.house.gov\/public_disc\/financial-pdfs\/2020\/10042701.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial disclosure form<\/a>, and $500,000-$1 million of Netflix shares.<\/p>\n<p>Luria, a moderate member of her party, represents Virginia\u2019s 2nd district, which includes parts of Norfolk and the Tidewater region.<\/p>\n<p>Luria\u2019s comments are unpopular, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/10\/stock-trading-congress-nancy-pelosi\/\">recent polls<\/a>, and come after an intense push to protect congressional stock trading by members in both parties. Abigail Spanberger, a fellow moderate from Virginia.
