Sarah Palin for the mass shooting that severely injured former Democratic Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.<\/p>\n<p>A 2017 editorial by the New York Times, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/context-cdn.washingtonpost.com\/notes\/prod\/default\/documents\/12086d0c-37c3-49ef-af8e-e95c5b523444\/note\/d3860774-4a4d-4aca-9704-2583abc3e8c4.#page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">America\u2019s Lethal Politics<\/a>,\u201d is at the center of the defamation lawsuit Palin filed asserting the editorial pushed unfounded claims. Palin claims Bennet and the New York Times purposefully wove a narrative that her political action committee incited the shooting that killed six people and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2011\/01\/10\/giffords-shot-palin-blamed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wounded<\/a> Giffords in January of 2011. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/30\/sarah-palin-2022-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>(RELATED:&nbsp;\u2018Would Love To\u2019: Sarah Palin Signals Her Return To Politics Ahead Of 2022 Midterms)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The New York Times\u2019 lawyer, David Axelrod, asked Bennet under oath if he intended to \u201charm\u201d Palin when he changed the editorial\u2019s wording, according to a Reuter\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/ny-times-ex-editor-denies-trying-blame-sarah-palin-congresswomans-shooting-2022-02-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I didn\u2019t,\u201d Bennet answered. \u201cWe don\u2019t promise to be perfect, we promise to try our damnedest to be perfect, and when we\u2019re not, we try to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Sarah Palin\u2019s anticipated witness list has been unsealed in her lawsuit against the New York Times. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lawcrimenews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LawCrimeNews<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hM6L7PwIfI\">pic.twitter.com\/hM6L7PwIfI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Adam Klasfeld (@KlasfeldReports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KlasfeldReports\/status\/1490799248950112274?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 7, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The editorial, published in 2017, stated, \u201cBefore the shooting, Sarah Palin\u2019s political action committee circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennet called his actions \u201ca mistake,\u201d saying, \u201cI\u2019ve edited and written hundreds of pieces on deadline, thousands. I have made very few mistakes, at least ones that I know of,\u201d according to Reuters. He lamented that the move caused the New York Times\u2019 to appear partisan.<\/p>\n<p>He said,\u201d It\u2019s extremely important for the editorial board to have a reputation to call balls and strikes without partisanship,\u201d according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Bennet admitted that he had not issued Palin an apology even after being forced to change his wording by the mounting critics, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/09\/ex-new-york-times-editor-james-bennet-regrets-partisan-palin-op-ed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the New York Post. He said he didn\u2019t think Palin would see his apology was done \u201cin good faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would look like an effort to get out of a lawsuit,\u201d Bennet said.<\/p>\n<p>Palin\u2019s lawsuit is seeking $421,000 in damages, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/sarah-palin-set-battle-new-york-times-defamation-trial-2022-01-23\/?utm_source=pocket_mylist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to Reuters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former New York Times editor, James Bennet, testified in court Wednesday that he did not deliberately blame former Republican Alaska Gov.
